iOS 16.2: Apple withdraws option to upgrade to new Home architecture

Paris, France - Sep 17, 2022: New revamped modified Home Kit app application on the display of Apple Computers iPhone 14 Pro smartphone showing new features categories, control at a glance, multi camera view

One of the most important new features in iOS 16.2 and macOS Ventura 13.1 is the ability to upgrade to a new Home app architecture. While Apple hasn't shared details on the exact changes, the company says the upgrade offers "improved performance and reliability" for HomeKit accessories.

Upgrading the Home architecture requires that all devices that access Home be updated to the latest version of the operating system. But the upgrade is said to cause several problems. Amid these reports, it now appears that Apple has removed the option for users to update their Home app architecture (via MacRumors). Issues reported by users include HomeKit devices getting stuck in the "updating" or "configuring" state, devices missing entirely, invitations to share Home with other users not working, HomeKit Secure Video recordings, and more.

iOS 16.2: New HomeKit architecture causes problems

Upgrading to the new Home app architecture is a user-initiated process in the Software Update section of the Home settings in the Home app, and as of a few hours ago, the option to upgrade is no longer visible in the app. Therefore, users who have not yet upgraded to the new architecture will not be able to do so until Apple re-enables the option. Users who have already upgraded will remain on the new architecture and will not be able to go back to the previous architecture. As soon as we have more information on this, we will of course report back. (Photo by hadrian / Bigstockphoto)
