iOS 15 expands “Unlock with Apple Watch”

Morgantown, WV - February 5, 2021: Apple iPhone and watch use face recognition to open phone even when wearing a face mask

Apple's "Unlock with Apple Watch" feature will expand its scope in iOS 15. The alternative authentication method can soon also be used for Siri device requests.

It's a solution born out of necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unlock with Apple Watch first appeared in iOS 14.5 as a complement to Face ID, allowing users to unlock the iPhone while wearing a mask. With a paired, password-protected and unlocked Apple Watch, users can authenticate and access their device when Face ID detects a face covering. The verification technology will be expanded with iOS 15. As reported by 9to5Mac discovered, “Unlock with Apple Watch” in iOS 15 will also apply to Siri requests such as adjusting phone settings or reading messages.

“Unlock with Apple Watch”: Is watchOS 8 also required?

Currently, users must confirm ownership of a device using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode before they can perform such actions. A new dialog under the "Unlock with Apple Watch" section in the "Face ID & Passcode" settings reveals the change.

Use the secure connection to your Apple Watch for Siri requests or to unlock your iPhone when an obstruction, such as a mask, prevents Face ID from recognizing your face. Your watch must be password-protected, unlocked, and on your wrist.

It's unclear whether watchOS 8 is also required for the new feature to work, although such a requirement is unlikely considering that Unlock with Apple Watch is already available in watchOS 7. (Photo by BackyardProductions / Bigstockphoto)
