Apple unveiled the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models at the “Far Out” event.

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus as part of the “Far Out” event presented, updates to its flagship smartphone, ditching the mini model in favor of something larger. Now officially announced, the iPhone 14 follows the iPhone 13 in the ever-growing iPhone catalog. This time around, there's a major upgrade in the lineup. Instead of offering a standard and a mini model, Apple has swapped out the smallest smartphone for a much larger alternative. In addition to the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, there's the iPhone 14 Plus, a reissue of the suffix and a smartphone with a 6.7-inch display. As previously mentioned in rumors, Apple is reusing the A15 in the iPhone 14 rather than using an entirely new chip, albeit with "pro-level" improvements. This is a major departure for Apple, as the company typically upgrades the chip with each new generation of iPhone.

iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus

The chip used features a five-core GPU, a six-core GPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, the 16-core Neural Engine, and the image signal processor. The main camera is a 12-megapixel lens with a larger sensor that uses an f/1.5 aperture and 1.9-micron pixels, as well as Sensor Shift OIS. Apple claims this results in a 49 percent improvement in low-light photography over the previous generation. On the front, the TrueDepth camera has been updated and the 12-megapixel shooter has an f/1.9 aperture. Also, the TrueDepth camera has autofocus for the first time.

Apple relies on eSim technology

Apple's computational photography has been updated by bringing Deep Fusion processing earlier in the capture process. This so-called "Photonic Engine" improves low-light performance and color reproduction. Video recording has also been improved with Action Mode, a stabilization system that uses the entire camera sensor to produce less blurry shots. One unexpected change concerns the SIM card, as Apple is increasingly relying on the eSIM card. In the United States, the iPhone 14 will be sold without a physical SIM card slot, requiring the use of eSIMs instead, although SIM card slots will still be available outside the US.

Apple announces satellite support

In the area of connectivity, Apple is introducing the SOS emergency call via satellite. Users can send an emergency text message via satellite if they are in an area with a weak signal. Using a compression system that reduces the size of text messages by a third, the system can send a text message in less than 15 seconds. The relay centers set up by Apple forward the messages to emergency services that only work with phone calls. The satellite function will be introduced in the US and Canada in November and will be free for two years after purchasing an iPhone 14. Prices for the iPhone 14 start at 799 $, for the Plus model at 899 $. Pre-orders will be accepted from September 9th. The iPhone 14 will be available from September 16th, while the Plus model will be delivered from October 7th. (Image: Apple)
