Epic Games today introduced a new application called Live Link Face. Aimed at game developers and artists, the application can capture high-quality facial animations.

The Live Link Face app for iPhone and iPad lets game developers capture facial expressions in real time and apply them live to characters in Unreal Engine. The application uses Apple's ARKit and can only be used on devices with a TrueDepth camera. According to the document published today, blog post:

Live Link Face streams high-quality facial animations in real-time from your iPhone directly to characters in Unreal Engine. The app's tracking uses Apple's ARKit and the iPhone's TrueDepth front-facing camera to interactively track a character's face and transmit that data directly to Unreal Engine over a network using Live Link.

Suitable for small and large productions

According to Epic Games, the app is not only intended to appeal to large game developers but also to smaller ones. It is a valuable tool that can be used for both small and large productions. It goes on to say:

The app is designed to deliver excellent results both at professional recording stages with multiple actors in full motion capture suits and at a single artist's desk, delivering expressive and emotive facial performances in any production situation.
