WhatsApp is getting a new feature that will likely be exciting for many users: You'll soon be able to create your own AI chatbots directly within the app. Similar features are already available from OpenAI with its Custom GPTs or Google Gemini with its so-called Gems. Now WhatsApp is following suit – with a system that focuses on user-friendliness and requires no programming knowledge.
AI chatbots are no longer just of interest to tech professionals or developers. They are increasingly becoming personalized and integrated into popular platforms. This is exactly what's happening with WhatsApp. Meta brings the ability to build your own chatbot directly to your smartphone. The new feature is called AI Studio and has already appeared in initial beta versions.
WhatsApp integrates the Meta AI Studio
Previously, if you wanted to create an AI chatbot that worked on meta platforms like Messenger or Instagram, you had to use the web-based Meta AI Studio. Now, this is built directly into WhatsApp. The app is getting a new feature called AI Studio, which walks you through setting up your own chatbot step by step.
No programming knowledge required
Meta's goal is clear: to make the creation process as simple as possible. You don't need any prior technical knowledge. The user interface guides you through every step. First, you decide what role your chatbot should play—for example, as a learning coach, travel companion, or motivational speaker. Then you choose the style and tone. Options include calm and thoughtful, energetic and humorous, or factual and informative. Based on your selection, WhatsApp then automatically makes suggestions for how your bot should speak and respond. This saves time and ensures that your chatbot functions exactly as you envision.
Sharing optionally possible
Your chatbot will initially be private. However, you can share it with others if you wish. You'll receive a unique link for this. OpenAI and Google work in a similar way. So there's potential for a community where you can get ideas or present your own bots.
Function currently in testing phase
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is currently being tested by a small group of beta testers on iOS and Android. It is not yet publicly available. However, the hints in the current beta versions indicate that WhatsApp is preparing for the launch. In recent weeks, Meta has already introduced other new features, such as an official iPad version of the app and initial username testing. While there is no exact rollout date yet, development appears to be well advanced.
Your own AI chatbot in WhatsApp – soon a reality
With AI Studio, WhatsApp is launching a tool that lets you build your own AI chatbot without any technical hurdles. You define the bot's role, its style, and how it should speak to you. The feature is currently still in the testing phase, but initial indications suggest that the official launch is imminent. As soon as the feature is released, you can get creative directly in the app – without any external tools and without any programming knowledge. (Image: Shutterstock / DenPhotos)
