Connecting two iPads: Apple is exploring new accessories

According to a new patent filing, Apple is exploring the use of an accessory that would connect two notebook-style iPads together. What could this be used for?

The patent application, titled "Modular Electronic Devices with Multiple Displays," filed recently with the U.S. Patent Office, explains that if two iPads or iPhones are connected via an accessory, one could be used as a display and the other as a dynamic keyboard. The proposed coupling accessory consists of two small connectors and a hinge, with mobile devices mechanically attached to either side. The connector would facilitate data transfer between the devices, allowing them to work together as a single system.

The images included in the patent application mainly suggest that this accessory would allow for a notebook-style setup. The whole thing could be used in portrait or landscape mode. Using a second screen for a dynamic keyboard would offer several unique solutions, such as the ability to change functionality depending on the user's needs, similar to the MacBook Pro Touch Bar. However, depth and tactile feedback, as only achieved with a physical keyboard, would likely be lacking.

In addition to the notebook-style setup, the patent suggests that two devices, when attached at their longest edges, could also be used in a book-style setup.

Apple patents reveal Apple's world of ideas

This seems to be similar to the layout of the Microsoft Surface Duo. Devices with a second screen have been the subject of numerous Apple patents, such as the “multiple electronic device system” application, which describes how two or more devices can act as one device when brought close together through the use of proximity sensors. Although Apple regularly files numerous patent applications and many of them are practically never realized, they can often provide a fascinating insight into Apple’s current research and development areas. So in the end, this patent can also remain just an interesting idea. You don’t have an iPad yet? The models are currently priced between 300 and 2300 euros. (Image: Apple)
