ChatGPT for Mac has a new feature: Recording Mode. After initially rolling out the feature for Teams, Enterprise, and Education accounts in June, it's now also available for Plus subscribers. OpenAI is expanding the capabilities of its AI application with a tool that's particularly useful for everyday work: recording and logging conversations directly from the ChatGPT app.
Whether it's a video call, a spontaneous conversation, or a customer phone call, important information is often lost because no one has taken notes. Many people turn to meeting tools like Zoom or Notion for this. ChatGPT aims to eliminate this intermediate step. The new recording mode is designed to help you easily capture conversations and automatically create useful notes. It works directly within the app, without the need for additional software. What makes this mode special is the way it works: unobtrusively, locally, and without any visible participation in the conversation.
What is the recording mode in ChatGPT?
The feature was first introduced in June in a YouTube presentation for enterprise customers. The public announcement followed in July on X (formerly Twitter), and the mode is now also available to ChatGPT Plus users. The macOS app now has a new button with a microphone icon. Pressing this button starts an audio recording via the Mac's system microphone. Once the recording is complete, the audio file is automatically uploaded to OpenAI. There, it is transcribed—i.e., converted into text—and analyzed by ChatGPT. The result is a structured conversation report consisting of:
- Summaries
- Important talking points
- To-dos or action points
- Any follow-up questions
How is ChatGPT different from other meeting assistants?
Unlike tools like Zoom AI Companion or Notion AI, which actively appear as participants in a meeting, ChatGPT's recording mode runs locally on the Mac. No additional app, no invitation, no access to calendars, or third-party APIs is required. The system simply listens as soon as the button is pressed. This can be useful – for example, for informal conversations, spontaneous phone calls, or internal meetings that would otherwise not be automatically documented. ChatGPT creates usable notes in just a few seconds, ready for immediate processing.
What about data protection?
Precisely because the feature runs unobtrusively in the background, legal questions arise. OpenAI explicitly states that users must inform themselves about applicable laws and obtain consent before recording other people. This applies not only in professional but also in private contexts. The regulations vary by country and sometimes even regionally. The responsibility lies entirely with the user. Anyone who wants to use the feature legally should therefore familiarize themselves with the local data protection regulations.
Record, summarize, use – directly in ChatGPT
The recording mode makes ChatGPT for Mac even more useful—especially for Plus subscribers who want to be more productive. The feature is easy to use, works locally, and generates structured notes directly from real conversations. This saves time and reduces the risk of losing important information. Compared to traditional meeting tools, it's more flexible to use because it doesn't require active participation in the call. It's important to remember that it must be used responsibly. OpenAI's privacy policy isn't a side note, but a central component of the feature. If you follow this, the recording mode provides a powerful tool that meaningfully expands the use of ChatGPT on your Mac.
