The Apple Vision Pro may see a major update in control technology. With the new update, users could create their own hand gestures and assign specific functions to them. This innovation not only promises increased usability but also opens doors to numerous possible applications.

Apple has always focused on breaking down technological barriers and making its devices accessible to everyone. The introduction of custom gestures for the Apple Vision Pro is another step in that direction. The recently granted patent, "Method and Apparatus for Defining Custom Hand Gestures," demonstrates how Apple plans to make interaction with the Vision Pro even more intuitive and personalized.

What the patent contains

The new patent would allow each function of the Apple Vision Pro to be assigned a unique gesture. Imagine you're on an important Zoom call and want to quickly mute yourself. With a simple cutting gesture in front of your neck, similar to a radio DJ, you could now do this. Or you could make the familiar "call me" hand gesture and the Vision Pro will automatically send your contact information to the person you're looking at. This new functionality goes far beyond the previous control options.

The technology behind the gestures

The patent describes in detail how these gestures are recognized and assigned. Using the so-called Gesture Association Tool, you can select the functions you want and assign specific gestures to them. The tool first asks which function you want to create a gesture for. You are then asked to repeat the desired gesture in order to register it. An interesting detail is that Apple Vision Pro can also recognize known but not yet used gestures. An example of this is holding your palms together, which is interpreted as "Namaste". If the gesture is not recognized, you can name it and perform it again.

Benefits of Custom Gestures

The ability to create custom gestures brings numerous benefits:

  • Individual customization: You can tailor the Vision Pro exactly to your needs and make the controls even more intuitive.
  • Accessibility: People with limited mobility can use gestures that are easier for them to perform.
  • Productivity: Efficient gestures can significantly speed up your workflow by performing frequently used functions quickly and easily.

Apple Vision Pro: Future Prospects

Although the patent mainly describes how the technology can be implemented, the possible applications are almost endless. The smallest gestures could trigger extensive functions and revolutionize the use of the Vision Pro. This opens the door to a variety of new, creative interactions with the technology.
