Apple Stores introduce “Tap to Pay” in the US

Apple's Tap to Pay, the contactless payment feature that allows one iPhone user to pay another without additional hardware, is rolling out in Apple's US stores starting today.

After a test phase in the Apple Park Visitor Center, Tap to Pay is now being introduced in all US Apple Stores. As Bloomberg reported, the feature was introduced today, although it is not known how long it will take to reach all stores. Tap to Pay was announced in February 2022. The feature is not exclusive to Apple Stores but will be available to all businesses that want to adopt it.

Tap to Pay: iPhone becomes a payment terminal

The first company to announce the launch was Stripe, which launched a closed beta program for its client companies in February. In Apple Stores, this means employees can retire the current "Isaacs," the modified iPhones with a second device for cashing credit cards. This means any iPhone XS or newer—running the latest version of iOS—can accept transactions via Tap to Pay. Likewise, any updated iPhone can pay another user, whether a business or an individual. It is currently unknown when the feature will be available in Germany. (Image: Apple)
