Apple has now released the update to iOS 18.1, accompanied by updates for iPadOS 18.1, watchOS 11.1, tvOS 18.1, visionOS 2.1 and macOS 15.1. In addition to a variety of improvements and bug fixes, the update marks a significant step into the future, especially with the introduction of Apple Intelligence - a new AI technology that is currently only available in the USA. These updates expand the usability, performance and functionality of Apple products and usher in a new era for the use of smart devices.

The development of iOS 18.1 was anything but ordinary. Back in July, Apple launched the first beta phase, which focused exclusively on testing Apple Intelligence - an innovative AI technology that has so far only been tested in the USA. Apple Intelligence will play a crucial role in Apple products in the future and expands Siri and other functions with smarter and context-based responses. Although Apple Intelligence is currently only available in the USA, it will soon be expanded to other English-speaking countries.

The most important innovations and features of iOS 18.1

Apple Intelligence: Advanced AI features

The groundbreaking Apple Intelligence offers US users new tools to improve text and make it easier to work with content. There are:

  • Writing tools to improve texts,
  • Siri’s language understanding, which is much more context-sensitive,
  • Notification summaries that intelligently organize messages and updates,
  • Clean-up function that removes unwanted image content.

These features are groundbreaking for the user experience and are intended to make everyday life with iOS even smarter.

Revised Control Center

Apple has redesigned Control Center so you can now add custom controls for connections and more easily reset configurations. These customizations allow you to more efficiently manage your network settings and provide more control over the user interface.

New camera features

iOS 18.1 offers interesting camera updates especially for iPhone 16 users:

  • Quick switch to the front camera: With one tap you can now seamlessly switch to the front TrueDepth camera.
  • New mode for spatial photo and video recording: Owners of an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max can now take impressive 3D shots and make their images even more realistic.

AirPods: hearing test and hearing aid function

iOS 18.1 brings innovative audio features to the second generation AirPods Pro:

  • Hearing test: Using a scientifically validated method, you can now check your hearing directly via the AirPods Pro.
  • Hearing aid function: A personalized feature that responds to ambient noise, music and conversations to support users with mild to moderate hearing loss.

bug fixes and improvements

Apple has fixed a number of issues and optimized existing features. These include:

  • RCS Business Messaging: You can now chat with businesses using RCS, provided the service provider supports it.
  • Podcast app: Fixed a bug that caused unwatched episodes to be incorrectly marked as watched.
  • 4K video playback: Resolved an issue that caused 4K videos in the Photos app to stutter on heated devices.
  • Digital Car Key: Fixed a bug where digital car keys would not work after a restore.
  • iPhone 16 reboot issue: An annoying problem that caused the phone to suddenly reboot has now also been fixed.

Further updates for watchOS, tvOS and macOS

iOS 18.1 is part of a larger update package that also includes updates for other Apple platforms:

  • watchOS 11.1: Adjustments to sleep apnea detection.
  • tvOS 18.1 and visionOS 2.1: Minor adjustments without major innovations.
  • macOS 15.1: Similar to iOS 18.1, the Apple Intelligence features were introduced here. This is also a major update that gives US users access to the latest AI tools.

Each update brings additional stability and security improvements that Apple incorporates into each system update.

The update for iOS 18.1 – A step into the future

With iOS 18.1, Apple is sending a clear signal towards the future. The introduction of Apple Intelligence shows how much focus there is on artificial intelligence and how important Apple considers this technology for the development of its products. Even though many features are currently only available in the USA, it is only a matter of time before these innovations will be introduced worldwide. The update offers exciting improvements for iPhone users and takes the user experience to a new level. If you are an iOS user, you should definitely consider updating to iOS 18.1 to at least benefit from the latest bug fixes and bring your device up to date. Looking for the best accessories?
