The iPhone 17 Pro is about to be unveiled. Apple is expected to present the new model at its own event in early September. One thing is already clear: the camera is going to be a lot of changes. A total of four new features are planned – and they affect almost all areas of photography and video recording. Here you can find out in detail what will change with the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.
For years, Apple has relied on a triple camera setup with wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle, and telephoto lenses on its Pro models. However, not all lenses have been upgraded at the same time. The iPhone 14 Pro debuted a 48-megapixel sensor in the wide-angle lens, and the iPhone 16 Pro followed suit with the ultra-wide-angle sensor. Now it's apparently the telephoto lens's turn. There are also updates to the video features, selfie camera, and camera module design. If you want to know whether the iPhone 17 Pro warrants a camera upgrade, you can find all the information here.
48-megapixel telephoto lens for better zoom shots
The telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will be equipped with a 48-megapixel sensor for the first time. This would also bring the last camera in the trio up to date. Until now, the telephoto lens was the only one to operate at a lower resolution. What does this mean for you? Greater detail when zooming in, better portrait quality, and generally cleaner shots with less image noise. It's also possible that Apple will adjust the default zoom level in the camera app. It's currently five times zoom. There are no concrete details yet, but with a better sensor, new options are conceivable.
Multi-camera video recording in the Apple Camera app
Until now, it was only possible to record video with multiple cameras on the iPhone simultaneously using third-party apps. The iPhone 17 Pro is now the first to integrate this feature directly into the Camera app. This means you could, for example, film with the front and rear cameras simultaneously, or record with the wide-angle and telephoto lenses in parallel. Why Apple is bringing this feature exclusively to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max is not yet known. It may require new hardware, such as faster image processors or optimized sensors. One thing is certain: native support offers advantages in terms of usability, stability, and performance.
24-megapixel TrueDepth camera for better selfies
The front camera hasn't changed in a long time. Apple has been working with a 12-megapixel sensor for years. The iPhone 17 Pro and all other models in the 17 series (including the cheaper iPhone 17 and the new iPhone 17 Air) are now set to receive an upgrade: a new 24-megapixel TrueDepth camera is planned.
- What this means for you: sharper selfies, better portrait results, clearer images in low light, and higher-quality video calls. This is a noticeable improvement, especially for users who regularly use FaceTime or social media.
New camera module design – from “hump” to “island”
The camera module has protruded slightly from the casing since the iPhone 6. Over the years, this so-called "camera bump" has become larger and more dominant. Apple could fundamentally change the design with the iPhone 17 Pro. A new shape is planned that is more accurately described as a "camera island." The module will extend across the back of the iPhone as a wide bar. Components such as the flash will be positioned further away from the lenses. This not only looks different, but could also have practical advantages, for example in light distribution or the use of sensors. Concrete technical effects are not yet known, but Apple generally does not make such design changes without a functional reason.

iPhone 17 Pro: More technology for better shots
The iPhone 17 Pro brings four major camera innovations: a 48-megapixel telephoto lens, multi-camera video recording directly in the Camera app, a significantly improved 24-megapixel front-facing camera, and a new design for the entire camera module. This is a significant upgrade, especially for users who often use their iPhone for photos, videos, or content creation. If you're considering upgrading to the iPhone 17 Pro, the new camera features are a real selling point. While Apple will surely unveil other features, the camera already shows: The iPhone 17 Pro will be significantly better than its predecessor. Looking for new accessories?
