iPhone 17 Air: Five things that Pro users have to do without

The upcoming iPhone 17 Air could be an attractive option for many Pro users. With its ultra-thin, futuristic design, it aims to lure users away from the Pro models. But despite the attractive design and new technology, Pro users will have to prepare for some compromises. Here are the top five things you'll have to give up if you're looking to upgrade from the Pro model to the iPhone 17 Air.

The iPhone 17 Air is not only designed to impress with its ultra-thin design but also with its technology. Many Pro users who have preferred the powerful and feature-rich models for years will wonder whether the new model is worth the change. But one thing is clear: anyone who switches from a Pro model to the iPhone 17 Air will have to forego some of the features that previously made the difference.

No ultra-wide-angle and telephoto cameras

One clear difference between the iPhone 17 Air and the Pro models is the camera system. While the Pro models will continue to feature three cameras, including an ultra-wide-angle and a telephoto camera, the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to offer just a single rear camera. This is expected to use a new "Fusion" technology, but you'll have to forego the versatility of the additional camera lenses. Those who like to take ultra-wide-angle shots or appreciate the optical zoom of the telephoto camera will clearly feel this difference.

A19 instead of A19 Pro chip

Pro models traditionally get Apple's most powerful chips. The iPhone 17 Air will most likely use the new A19 chip, while the Pro versions will have the even more powerful A19 Pro chip. While the A19 chip certainly offers sufficient performance for most applications, the A19 Pro could offer an advantage in computationally intensive tasks and future features, especially in areas of artificial intelligence or gaming.

Shorter battery life

One of the features that the Pro models are known for is their excellent battery life. The iPhone 17 Air, which will have an ultra-thin design, may see a slightly shorter battery life compared to the Pro models. While the battery of the 17 Air is expected to be comparable to that of the iPhone 16 base model, users who rely on maximum battery life may miss the longer stamina of the Pro models.

Less RAM

There is also a clear difference in terms of RAM. The Pro models of the iPhone 17 are said to be equipped with 12 GB of RAM, while the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air remain at 8 GB. This may not make much difference for everyday use, but when it comes to complex tasks or upcoming functions that require a lot of RAM, the 12 GB of the Pro models could be an advantage in the long term. This could play a role especially in the area of artificial intelligence and future updates.

No titanium case

The Air model will likely ship with a primarily aluminum-based chassis, while the Pro versions will continue to rely on titanium. For most users, this may not matter much, as aluminum is still a lightweight and robust material. However, titanium offers additional stability and a higher-quality feel, which could be a deciding factor for some users.

iPhone 17 Air vs. Pro models

The iPhone 17 Air will undoubtedly be an exciting model in 2025, attracting many users with its ultra-thin design. However, those looking to upgrade from a Pro model should be aware of its limitations. Forgoing the additional cameras, the more powerful processor, more RAM, and the titanium casing could be a dealbreaker for some. Ultimately, the decision depends on your priorities in your smartphone. If the slim design is more important to you than maximum performance and features, the iPhone 17 Air could still be the right choice for you. Looking for new accessories?
