Hands-On: Pitaka iPhone 17 case as Year of the Horse Edition

With the limited-edition "Happiness Rides In | Year of the Horse" series, Pitaka expands its portfolio with two special models, released just in time for the Lunar New Year. The focus is not on a new technical platform, but rather on a design evolution of the familiar minimalist iPhone 17 case made of aramid fiber.

The basis is identical to the models that already impressed me in practical testing. Accordingly, this is less about fundamental features and more about how the limited edition performs in everyday use and what added value it offers compared to the regular versions.

Technically, Pitaka remains true to its principles. The "Year of the Horse" models also rely on aerospace-certified aramid fiber, an extremely slim design, and full MagSafe compatibility. The concept is familiar: as little material as possible, as much precision as possible, and an iPhone that retains its slim shape even with a case.

The design is new. For the Year of the Horse, Pitaka has developed a multi-layered woven structure into which a galloping horse motif is directly incorporated. The edition is limited and comes in two color variations: "Amber" with vibrant orange tones and "Indigo" in a deep blue. Both models address the themes of movement, rhythm, and inner clarity, but interpret them differently.

Design

In direct hands-on inspection, it's immediately apparent that this isn't a simple print. The horse motif is part of a so-called "triple-layer fusion weaving" structure. Multiple layers of aramid fibers are interwoven to create contrasts, color gradients, and a noticeable depth. Depending on the angle of the light, the surface's appearance changes slightly, giving the case a dynamic look.

Despite this additional design, the case remains surprisingly understated. It doesn't appear cluttered, but rather integrates the motif harmoniously into the minimalist overall design. This is precisely where it differs from many other special editions on the market, which often rely more heavily on eye-catching effects.

Compared to the previously tested Pitaka cases, the surface appears somewhat more vibrant and textured, without losing its slim appearance.

Material, weight and workmanship

The aramid fiber used remains the key element. This material is extremely durable yet very lightweight. In practice, this means that the iPhone 17 case adds hardly any bulk and the device retains its original shape.

The build quality remains at the usual high standard. Edges are cleanly milled, cutouts are precisely positioned, and the case fits the device perfectly. Even after extended use, there is no discoloration or material fatigue, as previously mentioned. Scratches on the surface are within normal limits and, due to the woven structure, are less noticeable than on smooth cases.

The additional manufacturing technique also creates a subtly perceptible texture. This improves the grip without making the surface feel rough. The iPhone sits securely in the hand, which is definitely noticeable in everyday use.

MagSafe and wireless charging

A key feature remains full MagSafe compatibility. The limited-edition Pitaka iPhone 17 case also integrates the magnets precisely into the casing. Accessories adhere reliably, and wireless charging works without limitations.

In hands-on testing, there is no difference compared to the regular models. The connection is stable, nothing slips, and the charging performance remains constant. Therefore, the special edition meets the same technical standards as the versions I have already tested.

Protection in daily use

As with all minimalist Pitaka cases, the focus is not on maximum all-around protection, but rather on a balanced relationship between protection and design. The case reliably protects against scratches, everyday wear and tear, and minor impacts. At the same time, it remains extremely thin.

For users who prefer a slim case and aren't looking for a bulky outdoor shell, this concept remains valid. The "Year of the Horse" edition doesn't change this, but rather adopts the proven features of the basic version.

Overview of the Pitaka iPhone 17 case design edition

The limited-edition "Happiness Rides In | Year of the Horse" is primarily a design evolution of a previously reviewed Pitaka iPhone 17 case. Technically, everything remains the same: aerospace-grade aramid fiber, ultra-thin construction, feather-light weight, and full MagSafe and charging support.

The difference lies in the details. The multi-layered fiber structure with its woven horse motif creates visual depth and a tangible texture. The amber and indigo color variations add different accents, but both remain true to the minimalist concept.

Ultimately, this is an exclusive design variant of a proven product. Those who already appreciate the Pitaka iPhone 17 case and value a limited edition with a symbolic motif will find this a technically familiar, yet visually much more individual version. The price is €69.99, which is in line with previous Pitaka models. The best products for you: Our Amazon storefront offers a wide selection of accessories, including those compatible with HomeKit.
