Apple has released the first official information about iOS 18.6. The update is currently in beta and is expected to roll out to all users in the coming weeks. Although iOS 18.6 is a smaller update compared to iOS 26, which is coming this fall, it brings noticeable changes – especially for iPhone and iPad users in the EU. Two new features are in focus: easier installation of apps and app marketplaces from the internet.
With iOS 18.6, Apple is focusing primarily on stability and bug fixes. This was to be expected, as major features are reserved for the fall update. Nevertheless, there are some relevant innovations. Especially in the EU, Apple is adapting its system to current regulations. Users should have more control over how and from where they install apps – without the previous hurdles and warning messages that have previously prevented many from using apps outside of the App Store.
Installing apps directly from the Internet: What's changing
Apple has announced that iOS 18.6 significantly simplifies the installation of third-party apps and alternative app marketplaces over the internet. Two key improvements are planned:
- Installing app marketplaces from the web becomes easier
- Installing apps directly from third-party websites is also becoming more user-friendly
While this is already possible in principle, current iOS versions display multiple warnings that make the installation process seem daunting. These warnings have been a thorn in the side of regulators in the EU – and Apple is now responding.
New installation process with less friction
iOS 18.6 introduces a new two-step process for app installations. The first time you install an app from a specific developer on the web, you'll be guided through a more detailed disclosure. This will inform you exactly who is behind the app and what will be installed. For all subsequent apps from the same developer, this lengthy step is omitted—the installation process is then as convenient as with the traditional App Store. The goal is to give you more control without compromising security. In the long run, the user experience should be almost identical to the App Store installation.
More freedom for users – pressure from the EU is having an impact
Apple has faced criticism in the past because its previous security warnings regarding the installation of apps outside of the App Store were considered too restrictive. In the EU in particular, there were calls for Apple to make its platform more open. With iOS 18.6, the company is now implementing these requirements technically. The new rules apply exclusively to users in the EU. In other regions, the existing restrictions remain in place. This gives developers and users in the EU more freedom – which is not only important for the selection of apps, but also promotes competition between app providers.
Possible further changes: Apple Intelligence in China
Apple hasn't officially announced any new features for iOS 18.6 yet. However, there are indications that this update may be the first to introduce Apple Intelligence—Apple's new AI feature—in China. However, concrete details are still lacking. Currently, the focus is clearly on the changes to the app installation process for the EU.
iOS 18.6 makes app access more flexible
iOS 18.6 isn't a major feature update, but it's one with a clear focus: It primarily improves the user experience in the EU. Installing apps and marketplaces outside of the App Store will be easier, safer, and more transparent. This means Apple is meeting the demands of EU regulators and giving you, the user, more freedom. If you want to try out iOS 18.6, you can register for the beta version. The final version is expected to be released within the next few weeks. The update is especially worthwhile if you plan on using third-party apps. Looking for new accessories?
