Apple has been known for years for bringing innovative technologies to market and changing the way we use technology for good. Another significant chapter in this innovation story seems to be about to be written: Apple's own 5G modem chip. Since 2018, it has been rumored that Apple is working hard on its own 5G modem for its iPhones. According to the latest reports, led by renowned Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this chip is expected to be used in the first devices from 2025. This step marks a major change for Apple and could have far-reaching consequences for the mobile market.

The introduction of its own 5G modem is another strategic move by Apple to become more independent from external suppliers, such as current partner Qualcomm. The change has not only technical but also economic advantages. In 2019, Apple acquired the majority of Intel's modem business in order to advance the development of its own chip. Now, a few years later, these efforts seem to be bearing fruit. But what does this change mean for you as a user? Below we take a closer look at what you can expect from Apple's 5G modem and what impact this move could have on the smartphone market and your future iPhone experience.

The road to Apple's own 5G modem

The development and market launch

Apple's ambition to develop its own 5G modem did not come about overnight. There have been rumors about such plans since 2018. In 2019, Apple secured the necessary technology and expertise to develop its own chip by acquiring Intel's modem business. Loud According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the Apple 5G modem is expected to be launched for the first time in a fourth-generation iPhone SE in 2025. The same year also sees the launch of a new ultra-thin iPhone 17, which will also be equipped with the new 5G modem.

market potential and sales figures

Kuo predicts that Apple will ship between 35 and 40 million units of the new 5G modem in 2025. Growth is expected to increase rapidly and up to 180 million units could be shipped by 2027. This increase highlights the strategic importance that Apple attaches to its new technology.

Turning away from Qualcomm and the significance for the market

Until now, Apple has used Qualcomm's 5G modems for its iPhones. However, the relationship between the two companies has not always been smooth. In 2017, Qualcomm sued Apple for anti-competitive practices and unpaid royalties totaling $1 billion. Although both parties agreed in 2019, but switching to its own modem is a long-term solution that could give Apple more independence. Apple's goal is to gradually move away from Qualcomm and rely entirely on its own chips. This could have an impact on the entire smartphone market, as Qualcomm is a major player in the industry. It remains to be seen whether Apple's 5G modem can match or even surpass the established Qualcomm modems in terms of performance.

What does this mean for you as an iPhone user?

For you as an Apple user, the question naturally arises as to what advantages a 5G modem of your own will bring. Since Apple always strives to seamlessly integrate hardware and software, this could enable better performance, longer battery life and faster connections. Even though no technical details are currently known about the advantages of the Apple modem compared to the Qualcomm modems, it is likely that Apple will optimally adapt the chip to its devices in order to offer you an even better user experience.

Apple's future with its own 5G modem

By developing and introducing its own 5G modem, Apple is taking another decisive step towards independence from third-party suppliers. This allows the company to tailor its iPhones even more closely to the needs of its users while at the same time gaining more control over the technologies used. The gradual replacement of Qualcomm could have far-reaching consequences not only for Apple but also for the entire smartphone market. For you as a user, this means that you can look forward to exciting new iPhone models in the coming years that are equipped with the latest 5G technology. Whether Apple's modem will actually keep its promises and what advantages it will offer over the current models remains to be seen - but one thing is certain: Apple continues to aim to develop the best smartphones in the world.
