According to a new report, Apple plans to include advertising in its own Maps app starting in 2023.
According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple plans to display search ads in the Maps app on the iPhone starting next year. writes Gurman in his newsletter:
I believe that the technical preparations for introducing search ads in the Apple Maps app are already underway and the implementation should happen sometime next year.
The ads in the Apple Maps app wouldn't be the traditional banner ads you see on websites, but rather paid search results. For example, a fast-food chain could pay Apple to appear at the top of the results when someone searches for "burgers" or "fries." Many similar apps already offer search ads, including Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp.
Apple Maps: Apple wants to boost the advertising business
Apple already displays search ads in the App Store, allowing developers to pay to promote their apps to users searching for relevant search terms. Apple also plans to display ads in the App Store's "Today" tab and in the new "You May Also Like" section at the bottom of app lists, while banner ads will appear in Apple's "News" and "Stocks" apps. Last week, Gurman said Apple plans to significantly expand its advertising business over time. In his newsletter, he said Apple's advertising division generates about $4 billion in annual revenue, and Apple's advertising chief Todd Teresi wants to increase that number to at least $10 billion per year over time.
