Based on various reports, Apple is expected to unveil its first mixed reality headset later this year, focusing on augmented reality and virtual reality experiences. While many companies—including Meta—are banking on the idea of a "metaverse," a new report suggests that Apple's focus is quite the opposite.
In the latest edition of his newsletter Power On reported Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said he was told "pretty directly" that the idea of a "metaverse" was "taboo" internally at Apple. This is, of course, a stark contrast to the strategy of companies like Facebook, now known as Meta.
I would be shocked to hear one word on stage when Apple announces its headset: Metaverse. I was told quite directly that the idea of a completely virtual world that users can escape to - like in Meta Platforms/Facebook's vision of the future - is taboo for Apple.
Apple AR/VR headset is not an “all-day device”
Instead, Apple's focus is said to be on a mixed-reality headset that will be used for "gaming, communication, and content consumption" but won't be an "all-day device." Current rumors suggest that Apple's first augmented reality and virtual reality headset could be announced later this year. It's said to feature a high-tech design with an innovative triple-display configuration. It's also said to be more expensive than the competition, rumored to be around $3,000. So, things should remain pretty exciting. (Image: Rendersbyjan)
