2019: Major camera update for iPhone and iPad

Apple has introduced and launched the new iPhone and iPad line-up. The iPad Pro was the biggest innovation.

Since this year, all iPhones and new iPad Pro models have been equipped with Face ID. Now the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported back. Since his predictions have mostly been correct in recent years, they now carry more weight.

Face ID update

According to Kuo, Apple is planning a major Face ID update for 2019. Initially, however, the update will only be available for the upcoming iPhone line-up. The iPad models are not expected to follow until 2020. The update will affect the infrared illuminator of the TrueDepth camera. This will enable the iPhone to recognize faces even better in poor lighting conditions and in the dark than it currently does. It is also possible that Apple will equip an iPhone with a third lens for the first time. The revised lens system would allow, among other things, a 3x optical zoom and significantly improve shots in poor lighting conditions. Two new OLED models and an LCD device are also expected to be introduced in 2019.

iPad Pro with 3D

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will most likely use a 3D camera in the iPad first. The iPad could then take 3D pictures using the time-of-flight method. Kuo believes that this system will be available in the iPad as early as 2019. The iPhone will probably not be equipped with such features until a year later at the earliest. This technology could also significantly improve iPad Pro sales. It remains to be seen what Apple will ultimately decide.
