iPhone 13: Apple has tested Touch ID under the display

A few months ago, reports dominated the rumor mill that Apple was testing a new version of Touch ID in the iPhone 13. Specifically, the fingerprint sensor is said to have been placed under the display. Now it is reported that the feature will probably not debut in the iPhone 13.

Rumors about a reintroduction of Touch ID in the iPhone have been circulating for a while. But while a new version of the sensor is used in products such as the iPad Air, the biometric authentication system has not yet made it back into the flagship iPhone. Now, in his latest newsletter issue, Mark Gurman has addressed the topic expressedAccording to Gurman, Apple is still testing Touch ID in flagship iPhones, but the launch is unlikely to happen with the iPhone 13. Previous sources have claimed that Apple will add Touch ID to the iPhone 13 Pro models in addition to Face ID. But well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo was one of the first to claim in March this year that the return of Touch ID will not happen this year. Now Gurman seems to support this statement and go a step further.

iPhone 13 series will rely on Face ID

Touch ID isn't the only technology that could be embedded in the display. Gurman also believes that Apple has a "long-term goal" to implement Face ID in a similar way. Regarding the implementation of Face ID and Touch ID, Gurman says there are two possible scenarios. The first envisions that the high-end Pro models will eventually feature Face ID under the display, while the non-Pro models will continue to use a notch-based approach. The second scenario envisions that the premium segment will receive Face ID, while the lower-priced devices will have Touch ID integrated under the display. Ultimately, Gurman says there hasn't been a final decision yet, which is why the whole thing remains highly speculative. Whether we'll ever see a device with both Face ID and Touch ID combined is also uncertain. (Image: rendersbyian)
