iPad Air & iPad Pro: Switch to OLED starts in 2022

iPad Air & iPad Pro

Uzhgorod, Ukraine - December 15, 2020: New iPad Pro 12.9 inches and Apple Pencil from Apple on a light background, studio shot in Uzhgorod, Ukraine.

A new report supports previous claims that Apple plans to unveil its first OLED iPad in 2022. However, the statement differs when it comes to the iPad Pro.

There have long been rumors that Apple wants to equip the iPad range with OLED screens. It was originally claimed that the first iPad Pro devices with OLED screens would debut in the second half of 2021. However, most reports suggest a launch in 2022. The latest report, however, only partially supports the claims. The Elec used the term "iPad" to generically cover all models. However, the size specification can be used to filter out which versions are meant. For example, the new report states that Apple's first OLED model will be a 10.86-inch edition in 2022, suggesting that it will be an iPad Air.

iPad Air & iPad Pro: Apple could use different OLED structures

The following year, according to the publication, Apple will introduce iPad models in sizes 11 and 12.9 inches with OLED technology. Since the sizes are assigned to the iPad Pro series, it can be assumed that this also refers to the Pro series. Interestingly, the statement fits with the recent claim by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that an OLED iPad Air will go into production in 2022. The Elec continues:

It is very likely that the company will use different OLED structures for the iPad, which will be released next year, and its successors in 2023.

Specifically, it says that the 2022 model will use rigid OLED and thin-film encapsulation (TFE). The 2023 editions could follow the OLED system that Apple uses in its iPhones and thus use a flexible OLED display. The Elec has a mixed track record when it comes to Apple's future products, so whether the site will be right this time remains to be seen. (Photo by Denis Rozhnovsky / Bigstockphoto)
