The Google Smart Lock application recently received an update that can now turn the iPhone into a Google security key.

iPhone users who use Google's Smart Lock app will soon be able to integrate the security key directly into the device and use the iPhone as 2FA (two-factor authentication) for Google services. Most smartphone users use two-factor authentication based on SMS codes. However, these are not as secure as a physical security key that is connected to the respective device. But if you don't want a USB-like security key, you can now convert your iPhone into one. Version 1.6 of the Google Smart Lock app finally makes it possible. In the update description, the search engine giant explains the whole thing as follows:

With this new update, you can now set up the security key built into your smartphone, which is the best second verification step to protect your Google Account. We've also redesigned the app to make it even easier to use.

iOS 13.3 makes iPhone FIDO2 compatible

The security key is stored in the iPhone's "Secure Enclave". This contains, among other things, the data stored for Touch ID or Face ID as well as other cryptographic values. However, the app only covers Google services. By the way - if you are interested in a FIDO2 key that is compatible with all Apple devices, you should check out our Amazon Shop – there you will find a security key from Yubico. Please note: In order to use such a security key, the iPhone must have at least iOS 13.3 or newer.
