WhatsApp has released a new app specifically for the Apple Watch – though not officially yet. Currently, it's only available to TestFlight users participating in the beta program. This marks another attempt by WhatsApp to bring its features to the wrist. It's the first time the messaging service has offered a native app for the Apple Watch.
Until now, WhatsApp's functionality on the Apple Watch was limited. While notifications could be received, reading or replying to messages was only possible through workarounds. Many users relied on third-party apps, which were often unreliable or lacked features. With the new beta app, this changes fundamentally. WhatsApp is now testing an official solution designed to make the messenger truly practical for everyday use on the smartwatch.
New WhatsApp app for Apple Watch tested
The beta version of the WhatsApp app offers, for the first time, the ability to read and reply to messages directly on the Apple Watch. It's also possible to send message reactions, i.e., emojis as a quick response to incoming messages. Voice messages can also be recorded and sent via the watch's microphone. This works without the app needing to be actively open on the iPhone.
The Apple Watch app syncs with the existing WhatsApp installation on the iPhone. This means it doesn't run completely independently but requires an active connection to the iPhone. This pairing is currently necessary for operation, as WhatsApp doesn't support the Apple Watch as a standalone device. Nevertheless, many basic functions can be used directly on the watch without constantly having to reach for the smartphone.
Available only to beta testers
Currently, the app is only available to a limited group. Only those participating in the WhatsApp beta program via TestFlight can try out the new version. It has not yet been publicly released in the App Store. WhatsApp has also not yet announced a planned date for the official launch.
However, the test version suggests that the messaging service is close to implementing full integration into the Apple ecosystem. WhatsApp has a history of testing new features via TestFlight before incorporating them into the regular app.
Features and benefits at a glance
The WhatsApp Apple Watch app brings key messaging features directly to your wrist. These include:
- Read and reply to messages
- Send reactions with emojis
- Record and send voice messages
- Access to chat histories and notifications
This brings WhatsApp in line with other messaging services that already offer smartwatch support. iMessage and Telegram, in particular, have had a head start in this area. For users, the new app means greater convenience, especially when traveling or exercising.
No information yet on the official launch.
WhatsApp has not yet released any details regarding the public launch of the app. It is also unknown whether the app will function independently of the iPhone in the future. Currently, it remains dependent on a connection to the smartphone. Nevertheless, the beta test is considered an important step toward making the messenger available on more devices in the long term.
This development aligns with WhatsApp's overall strategy of broadening its reach. Following the introduction of multi-device support, desktop versions, and WhatsApp Web, the next step is the expansion to wearables. The Apple Watch app is a logical next step.
The WhatsApp app for the Apple Watch should be available to everyone soon.
The new WhatsApp app for the Apple Watch demonstrates the messenger's increasing flexibility. Although the app is currently only in the testing phase, it should soon be available to everyone. Once the beta phase is complete and the tester feedback is positive, a release in the App Store is likely.
The exact date remains unclear. But the direction is clear: WhatsApp will soon work on your wrist – with direct access to chats, voice messages, and reactions, without constantly needing your iPhone.
