Threads launches messaging in the EU – all information at a glance

Meta is adding a key feature to the social app Threads: group direct messaging. Following the launch of individual DMs in July of last year, group chats can now also be created. At the same time, the entire messaging system is being rolled out to users in the European Union for the first time. Threads thus reaches a new milestone, evolving from a mere posting platform into a full-fledged communications service.

Threads originally started as a text-based social network closely related to Instagram. The idea: a simple platform for short posts, discussions, and reactions that feels less hectic than other networks. But Meta had bigger plans from the start. With the launch of direct messages last year, the foundation was laid for Threads to become a place for private communication and group interaction. Now, this concept is being systematically expanded upon with group DMs.

Group DMs for up to 50 people

The new feature allows group chats with up to 50 participants. This is especially interesting for smaller communities, circles of friends, or project groups. To prevent misuse, only people who already follow can be added. While this somewhat limits the reach, it reduces spam and unwanted contacts. Groups can also be given their own names to better organize conversations or clearly separate topics.

Meta is also working on a system with link-based invitations. In the future, it will be possible to add members to groups via an invitation link without having to manually search for and add them. According to Meta, this feature is still under development.

More control and protection in messaging functions

Since Threads launched its own messaging system, Meta has continuously worked on improvements. In addition to support for media such as photos and videos, new privacy options have also been integrated. Users can specify who can message them, and problematic messages are automatically filed in a hidden folder. This is intended to better filter out unwanted or abusive contacts.

The new group DMs rely on these existing protection mechanisms. The same rules and filter settings apply here as for individual chats. The goal is to create the safest possible space for exchange without overly restricting communication.

Launch of messaging functionality in the EU

With this update, Meta is bringing the full Threads messaging experience to the European Union for the first time. In the coming days, all users in the region will have access to direct messages and group chats. This also applies to the enhanced message controls, privacy settings, and the hidden folder.

Meta emphasizes in a blog post that the messaging update will be rolled out gradually to avoid potential technical issues during launch. Once the rollout is complete, the new feature will be available to all EU accounts.

Threads messaging to be further improved

Meta plans to continually expand Threads' chat features. The company points out that future updates will be more focused on user feedback, meaning community experiences will play a central role in future adjustments.

According to Meta, Threads Messaging will be established not just as an add-on feature, but as an integral part of the app in the long term. The goal is to enable simpler and more direct communication within the platform without having to resort to external services.

Threads is developing into a communication platform

With the introduction of group DMs and the expansion of its messaging offerings to the EU, Threads is taking a significant step forward. What began as a text-only network is increasingly becoming a place for conversations, exchanges, and community interaction.

Meta is clearly positioning Threads as an alternative to existing social networks, which are increasingly focusing on private communication. The new features demonstrate that Threads isn't standing still, but is evolving into a versatile platform that facilitates discussions and personal connections alike.
