OpenAI has introduced Sora, a new app that can generate realistic AI videos. What's special about it is that the videos are not only generated but also shared on a dedicated social network. Access is available only by invitation, making Sora a hybrid of a creative AI platform and a private social network.
OpenAI has been one of the companies setting the tone in artificial intelligence development for years. Following the success of ChatGPT, the company is now venturing into video generation. Sora combines the latest technology with social features. Rather than simply providing a tool, OpenAI is focusing on an experience that combines creativity, exchange, and privacy.
The video model Sora 2 as a basis
The app's technical basis is the Sora 2 model. It is considered significantly more precise and realistic than its predecessors. According to OpenAI, it can better adhere to physical rules and faithfully depict complex movements. It is particularly suitable for realistic styles, cinematic sequences, and anime aesthetics. Another new feature is the ability to integrate audio elements. This allows for the generation of not only visual content, but also speech, background noises, and sound effects.
Cameos as a central feature
The app's core features are so-called Cameos. These allow you to create short videos incorporating your own likeness or that of a friend. A person's video can be analyzed to then faithfully insert their appearance and voice into new environments. Cameos can be shared directly within the Sora network. At the same time, users retain control: They can specify exactly who can use their likeness, and even other people's drafts can be viewed before they are published.
Social interaction in a closed network
Sora isn't intended as an open, mass network. Instead, the feed displays content from people you follow or interact with. OpenAI has also built in features that regularly check on your well-being. There are also controls that allow you to customize the feed display. The focus is clearly on sharing with friends and acquaintances. Furthermore, Sora is only accessible by invitation.
availability and access
The app will be available for iOS at launch, but only in the US and Canada. Those who receive an invitation can not only use the app but also access the video model via the Sora website. The basic version of Sora 2 is free. Those with a ChatGPT Pro subscription also get access to the more powerful Sora 2 Pro model.
OpenAI shows how AI becomes a medium for shared experiences
With Sora, OpenAI launches an app that combines generative AI videos and social interaction in a new way. Realistic renderings, audio integration, and a clear focus on privacy make the platform unique. The invitation-only approach creates a closed space designed to encourage interaction among trusted individuals.
