The first foldable iPhone is getting closer and closer. Rumors about such a device have been circulating for years, but according to credible leaks and reports, it's finally set to arrive in 2026. The iPhone Fold could be a turning point in Apple's smartphone strategy.

Apple is known for not immediately adopting new technologies, but rather only implementing them when they are fully developed. While manufacturers like Samsung and Huawei have already launched several generations of foldables, Apple has taken its time. Now, there are increasing indications that the first iPhone Fold will be released in 2026. The leaks so far paint a clear picture of what the device might look like and what features it might have.

Design: Book format instead of clamshell

According to insiders, the iPhone Fold will have a book-style design, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. This significantly differs from the clamshell design of the Galaxy Z Flip. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that the device will be between 9 and 9.5 millimeters thick when closed. When unfolded, it will measure only around 4.5 to 4.8 millimeters. A leaker on Weibo recently suggested a thickness of at least 4.8 millimeters when opened.

Displays: Outdoor and indoor screen

When folded, a 5.5-inch outer screen, similar to a typical iPhone display, is usable. When unfolded, a 7.8-inch iPad-style inner screen is revealed. Apple aims to make the fold almost invisible. This is achieved by a metal plate inside that distributes the stress during bending, creating a smoother surface. The technical specifications of the displays have also been leaked:

  • External screen with a resolution of 2,088 x 1,422 pixels
  • Internal screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio and 2,713 x 1,920 pixels

Housing and hinge

The iPhone Fold's casing is said to be made of titanium. For the hinge, Apple is reportedly using a combination of titanium, stainless steel, and liquid metal. The latter is produced using a die-casting process and is intended to solve two problems with foldable smartphones: greater durability and reduced creasing in the display.

Cameras: Four lenses in use

The device is expected to have four cameras: two rear cameras, one front camera, and an additional internal camera. Both rear cameras are expected to have 48 megapixels each. The internal display could feature an under-display camera, while the external display will have a punch-hole camera. This allows the iPhone Fold to be used flexibly both folded and unfolded.

Authentication via Touch ID

Instead of Face ID, Apple is expected to use Touch ID on the iPhone Fold. The fingerprint sensor will be integrated into the side button, similar to various iPad models. This will leave more space inside for other components.

Mobile communications with your own Apple modem

For cellular connectivity, Apple uses the second-generation C2 modem. This follows the C1 modem first used in the iPhone 16e. With this move, Apple is gradually moving away from Qualcomm. A physical SIM card slot is not planned, instead, there will be only eSIM support. The C2 modem is said to be faster overall and, in the US, also supports mmWave.

Battery life with high-density cells

To make room for a powerful battery, Apple is slimming down components like the display driver. High-density cells are being used, which are also expected in the upcoming iPhone 17 Air. This design ensures better energy efficiency and longer battery life.

Color options: Black and white

At launch, Apple is currently testing only two color variants: black and white. Whether there will be additional options before the device goes on sale remains unclear.

Price in the premium segment

The iPhone Fold will be the most expensive iPhone ever. Estimates range from $2,000 to $2,500. Some analysts say it will cost between $1,800 and $2,000, but one thing is clear: the device will be exclusively in the premium segment.

Market launch expected at the end of 2026

The iPhone Fold entered the new product introduction (NPI) phase at Foxconn in March. Production is scheduled to begin in late third quarter or early fourth quarter of 2025. Analysts such as Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu expect mass production in the second half of 2026. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman anticipates a sales launch in fall 2026.

iPhone Fold as a milestone in the premium segment

The iPhone Fold could mark Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone market. With a titanium chassis, a nearly crease-free display, a powerful camera, a new modem, and an improved battery, Apple aims to raise quality to a new level. Even though the price is high, the device will be a milestone for many fans. 2026 could therefore be the year Apple unveils its first foldable device.
