The Apple Watch is turning ten. Launched on April 24, 2015, it has since become one of the most popular smartwatches worldwide. In addition to the classic Apple Watch Series, there are now dedicated models like the Apple Watch Ultra and the Apple Watch SE. While many details about the upcoming Apple Watch Series 11 have been discussed recently, it's also worth taking a look at the plans for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the Apple Watch SE 3. Here's what's planned for these models in 2025.
A lot has changed since the first Apple Watch. Apple has expanded its portfolio and appealed to different target groups: adventurers opt for the rugged Ultra, while those on a budget opt for the SE. After a quiet 2024 with only minor adjustments, major innovations are now on the horizon. The next models are expected to offer new technology, improved health features, and revised designs. You can find the details here.
Apple Watch Ultra 3: Improvements in technology, design and features
5G and satellite connection
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is expected to feature 5G connectivity. This is made possible by a new modem from MediaTek, which is being used for the first time in an Apple Watch. There are also concrete rumors about a satellite connection. This would allow you to send text messages or share your location even without cellular or Wi-Fi if you are in remote areas. Apple is following the lead of providers like Garmin, which have long relied on satellite communication. The satellite connection will likely only be intended for emergencies, similar to the iPhone 14 and newer models. However, Apple could also offer the ability to send simple text messages via satellite. Important: This feature will be exclusive to the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and will not be included in the standard Series 11, according to the rumor mill.
New display and revised design
With the Apple Watch Series 10, Apple introduced a new LTPO3 OLED display that's brighter, larger, and faster. This new display is expected to be incorporated into the Apple Watch Ultra 3 in 2025. So you can expect a display that's up to 40 percent brighter and remains easy to read even in low-light conditions. The faster refresh rate also enables a ticking second hand on select watch faces. The back of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 could also be redesigned. Apple switched from ceramic to metal on the Series 10, installed a larger charging coil, and included an integrated antenna. All of these innovations could also affect the Ultra 3.

New health functions
Apple is working on a blood pressure monitor for the Apple Watch. This feature could be introduced with the Ultra 3 in 2025. However, the Apple Watch won't provide accurate systolic and diastolic readings. Instead, the watch will monitor changes in blood pressure over time and sound an alarm if high blood pressure is detected. After an alarm, you can share the information with a doctor, similar to what's already done for atrial fibrillation.
watchOS 12 and new software features
watchOS 12 will be released in September and will bring several visual innovations. Elements from visionOS, such as transparent surfaces, rounded buttons, and soft lighting effects, will also be featured on the Apple Watch. Additionally, Apple Intelligence will offer new features supported by a connected iPhone. The watch itself doesn't have sufficient processing power, but these features will be available when paired with an iPhone. A redesigned Health app is also planned, providing personalized health recommendations. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 will benefit from this.
Apple Watch SE 3: Affordable entry-level with new technology
Changed design and new display
The Apple Watch SE is rarely updated. The current model is from 2022, and an update is scheduled for 2025. Rumors of a hard plastic case appear to have been dispelled. Instead, Apple will likely stick with the tried-and-true aluminum. Design changes could bring a larger display and narrower bezels. Size options could increase to 41 mm and 45 mm, similar to the Apple Watch Series 7. This keeps the SE modern without directly competing with the Series 11. Also possible is the introduction of Always-On Display technology, which the SE has so far lacked.
New, faster chip
The Apple Watch SE 3 will most likely feature an S10 chip, which is currently used in the Series 10. This will allow the watch to launch apps faster, process Siri commands on the watch itself, and generally offer better performance. The new chip could also allow Siri to retrieve health data directly from the watch—a feature currently missing from the SE. An ultra-wideband chip is also conceivable, supporting precision search and better HomePod integration.

Improved health functions
The current Apple Watch SE lacks some health features such as ECG, temperature measurement, and sleep apnea detection. Apple could at least integrate sleep apnea detection in 2025. This feature requires no additional hardware and would therefore be a logical upgrade for the cheaper Watch.
start date
The Apple Watch Ultra 3, Apple Watch Series 11, and Apple Watch SE 3 will be unveiled in September 2025. They will likely be presented alongside the new iPhone 17 models.
Apple brings a breath of fresh air to its Watch models in 2025
2025 will be a big year for the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 will feature major innovations like 5G, satellite connectivity, a brighter display, and new health features. The more affordable Apple Watch SE 3 won't be forgotten either. With a faster chip, larger display, and new features, it takes a significant step forward. Whether you're looking for extreme adventures or simply a reliable smartwatch at a fair price, Apple will be bringing something new for everyone next year. Time for fresh accessories?
