The Apple TV+ series Mythic Quest has officially ended with its fourth season. The final episode, which aired on March 26, 2025, is being remastered after it was announced that the series would not be continued. This brings one of Apple TV+'s earliest original productions to a close.

Since its launch in February 2020, Mythic Quest has been a staple among workplace comedies on the streaming scene. Set in the world of video game development, the series offered a mix of humor, tech culture, team dynamics, and social commentary. After four seasons and several special episodes, the project is now coming to an end—with a deliberate conclusion rather than an abrupt cut.

Start and development of the series

Mythic Quest was one of the first series produced by Apple TV+ – just four months after the streaming service launched. The idea came from Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Megan Ganz. McElhenney also took on the lead role as Ian Grimm, the creative mind behind the fictional MMORPG "Mythic Quest." The series follows the employees of a development studio that runs a hugely successful online role-playing game. It explores internal conflicts, creative processes, technical challenges, and personal development. In addition to Rob McElhenney, Charlotte Nicdao (Poppy), Ashly Burch (Rachel), Imani Hakim (Dana), Danny Pudi (Brad), Jessie Ennis (Jo), Naomi Ekperigin (Carol), and David Hornsby (David) also starred in the series.

Special episodes and spin-offs

In addition to the regular seasons, two special episodes were produced. The first dealt with the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic and showed how the characters worked from home and coped with isolation. The second special episode addressed the return to the office, reflecting social changes after the lockdown. A four-part mini-spin-off series titled Side Quest was also released. This focused on both the game's developers and the player community.

Success despite production obstacles

The second season was released in 2021 – in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite challenging conditions, the series was renewed early for a third and fourth season. It has become a success with both viewers and critics. It currently has a 97 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The show's creative storytelling, the depth of character, and its handling of current topics such as equality, creativity under pressure, and toxic work culture in the tech industry were particularly praised.

The end of the series

The decision to end the series with the fourth season was apparently made after filming had concluded. The original finale had already been completed when Apple TV+ informed the producers that there would be no further season. The producers – including McElhenney – took the opportunity to create a revised version of the final episode with Apple's approval. The goal was to give the series a rounded and worthy ending. In a statement to Variety they said:

Endings are hard, but after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to an end. Because endings are hard, with Apple's blessing, we've made one final update for our final episode—so we can say goodbye instead of simply saying game over.

Farewell with thanks and respect

The producers specifically thanked the cast and crew for their commitment and Apple for their support. But most importantly, they addressed the fans:

Thank you for playing with us.

Even though the series has now concluded, its influence remains felt – both in the series universe of Apple TV+ and in the portrayal of work culture in the tech world.

Mythic Quest ends – but remains worth seeing

Mythic Quest wasn't your average comedy series. It took a complex topic—game development—and presented it in an accessible, witty, and often emotional format. The fourth season now marks the conclusion of this project. A deliberately reworked final episode ensures that viewers aren't left with an open ending, but rather a clear conclusion.
