Apple is bringing a new immersive concert experience with Metallica to Apple Vision Pro. Starting March 14, users can experience the sold-out finale of the M72 World Tour in Mexico City in ultra-high-definition 180-degree video and spatial audio. The combination of state-of-the-art camera and sound technology enables a completely new way to see a live concert – from perspectives never before possible.

Concerts are an opportunity for fans to experience their favorite bands up close. But not everyone has the chance to be there. Streaming has already revolutionized live recordings, but Apple is taking it even further with its immersive video technology. Metallica fans can now feel like they're in the middle of the crowd or right on stage. Lars Ulrich himself calls it a "game-changing" experience that Metallica and Apple have created together. Find out what makes the experience so special, the technology behind it, and how you can experience it for yourself here.

The Metallica Concert for Apple Vision Pro

The concert was filmed during the final show of the M72 World Tour in Mexico City. Over 65,000 fans were in attendance, and Apple used specially designed cameras to create a visual experience that draws you right into the action. Three songs are included in the immersive format:

  • Whiplash
  • One
  • Enter Sandman

With Apple Vision Pro, you can experience the concert from different perspectives. One of the most impressive is the famous Snake Pit—an area right next to the stage that's normally reserved for a few fans. Wide-angle shots also allow you to see the entire stadium in all its energy.

Technology behind production

Apple deployed 14 specially designed immersive video cameras for this production. These were positioned to capture close-ups of both the band and the audience in impressive quality. The cameras used:

  • Stabilized cameras for smooth movements
  • Cable-guided cameras for dynamic perspectives
  • Remote-controlled dolly systems that move across the stage

Additionally, Spatial Audio ensures you hear the concert as if you were actually there. The sound changes depending on your viewing direction, just like in a real stadium.

Here's how you can test the experience

The immersive Metallica concert will be available exclusively for Apple Vision Pro. If you don't already own the device, you can book a demo at an Apple Store. There, you'll get a preview of the concert and the chance to try out the technology. Additionally, the EP "M72 World Tour: Mexico City" will be released on Apple Music in Spatial Audio on March 14. This allows you to enjoy the live experience even without Vision Pro—at least acoustically.

More immersive experiences on Apple Vision Pro

In addition to Metallica, there is additional content in the new Apple Immersive Video format. These include:

  • The series “Adventure”, in which climber Kai Lightner, among others, dares a free solo ascent in Spain

  • The series “Boundless” with extreme athletes who venture into icy waters

  • The immersive sports film “VIP: Yankee Stadium,” which provides insights into the atmosphere of a New York Yankees baseball game

Additionally, “Bono: Stories of Surrender” will be available from May 30th – an immersive stage experience that explores the life and career of U2 frontman Bono.

  • Apple TV+: “Bono: Stories of Surrender” starts in May

Apple Vision Pro: The ultimate Metallica experience at home

Metallica and Apple are setting new standards for concert recordings with this project. The innovative camera technology and immersive audio format make it possible to experience a concert in a completely new way. Whether you're a Metallica fan or simply excited about the possibilities of the new technology, this experience could shape the future of concert streaming. The concert will be available on Apple Vision Pro starting March 14. Those who want to get a firsthand look can try a demo at the Apple Store or listen to the new Metallica EP on Apple Music.
