tvOS 18.4 Beta Apple

The latest beta version of tvOS 18.4 contains hints that Apple is working on a new smart home hub. The integration of the ChatKit framework into the tvOS code is particularly striking. Since there is currently no messaging app on either the Apple TV or the HomePod, this change raises some questions. There is speculation that Apple is developing some kind of control center for the smart home, which could be released in 2025.

With its products, Apple is pursuing a clear strategy to make the home more connected and intelligent. HomeKit, the HomePod and the Apple TV are already part of the smart home ecosystem. Now there are increasing indications that another device is being planned that will serve as a central hub for smart devices. The latest discoveries in tvOS 18.4 indicate that Apple is not only working on control, but also on expanded communication functions.

ChatKit framework in tvOS 18.4

With the current beta of tvOS 18.4, the ChatKit framework has been integrated into the code (via MacRumors). This framework enables, among other things, reactions to messages in iMessage. It displays messages such as "[Person] didn't like this" or "[Person] responded with [emoji]". This function has so far been of no use on devices such as the Apple TV or HomePod, as there is no messaging app on them. The integration in tvOS 18.4 could indicate that a new device is planned that is compatible with Messages and may also support video calls.

New Apple device with smart home focus

Apple is expected to be working on a smart home hub based on tvOS that will play a central role in home automation. This device could combine several functions:

  • control of HomeKit devices
  • support for video calls
  • Retrieving news and information
  • music playback and internet browser
  • display of photos and videos
  • Integrated sensors for temperature measurement and motion detection

The design is said to resemble a small iPad, but be more compact with a display measuring just six inches square. The device could sit on a table as well as be mounted on the wall. It's likely that Apple plans to have several of these hubs throughout the home to provide seamless control.

connection to iOS and tvOS

Apple uses a common code base for iOS and tvOS, so new features often appear in both systems. ChatKit was already included in iOS, but has only now been added to tvOS. This could either be a random code import or a deliberate move to prepare the new smart home device. Since tvOS already forms the basis for the Apple TV and HomePod, it is obvious that Apple would build the Smart Home Hub on it as well. This would create a unified platform for various devices in the HomeKit ecosystem.

Possible market launch in 2025

There has been no official announcement from Apple so far, but there is speculation that the new device could be released as early as 2025. A possible market launch could be in the second or third quarter of the year. In the coming months, further beta versions of tvOS could reveal even more details about the device.

tvOS 18.4 hints at a versatile smart home device

The beta of tvOS 18.4 gives strong indications that Apple is working on a new Smart Home Hub. The integration of the ChatKit framework suggests that the device is not only intended for controlling smart home devices, but also for communication and multimedia applications. If the rumors turn out to be true, Apple could expand its smart home ecosystem to include a central control center that combines various functions and makes the connected home even more convenient. With a possible release in 2025, it remains to be seen what further details will be announced in the coming months. (Image: Apple)
