Apple is tirelessly pushing ahead with the development of its operating system for the Apple Vision Pro, visionOS. While the latest version, visionOS 2.3, was released as a developer beta, Apple is already working internally on the upcoming major versions, visionOS 2.4 and 3.0. These early indications of future updates show that the company is not only addressing current user needs but is also focusing on innovative innovations in the long term.

visionOS is the heart of the Apple Vision Pro, Apple's first virtual reality headset. Since its launch, Apple has set itself ambitious goals to continuously develop the platform. The journey began with visionOS 1.0, and the launch of visionOS 2.0 in September 2024 marked another important milestone. Apple sees this software not just as a tool but as the basis for a new type of user experience. The work on visionOS 2.4 and 3.0 shows that Apple is consistently working on optimizing and expanding its platform.

Current developments and plans

Current status: visionOS 2.3

On Monday, the developer beta of visionOS 2.3 was released publishedThis version focuses primarily on improvements in stability and performance. It addresses bug fixes and optimizations that benefit developers and users. Even though this version is still being tested, there are already signs that Apple is already looking ahead to the next generation of the operating system.

References to visionOS 2.4 and 3.0

Apple accidentally referenced visionOS 2.4 and 3.0 in sample project documentation, as AppleInsider reported. These hints are clear evidence that work on future versions is already in full swing. According to the documents, visionOS 2.4 is expected to be released in spring 2025. It is not yet known what new features or changes this version will bring, but it could include further bug fixes and usability improvements. visionOS 3.0, the next major version, is also expected to set new standards.

Missing features: Is Apple Intelligence coming?

One of the biggest weaknesses of the Apple Vision Pro is currently the lack of Apple Intelligence features. These generative AI tools, which are available on other Apple devices with the M2 chip such as iPads and Macs, include Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground and more. It remains unclear whether these features will come to the Vision Pro with visionOS 3.0. If they are integrated, the headset could become much more attractive for professional and creative applications.

Why visionOS 3.0 is crucial

visionOS 3.0 could take Apple's headset to a new level. In addition to eliminating technical limitations and introducing new features, it is also about making the platform more accessible to a wider target group. Apple has so far positioned the Apple Vision Pro as an "early adopter product", but in the long term, more stable, functional and versatile software will be necessary to reach the mass market.

visionOS: What awaits us

The references to visionOS 2.4 and 3.0 show that Apple is not standing still. With each new version, the operating system becomes more powerful and future-proof. Whether bug fixes, performance improvements or the possible introduction of Apple Intelligence - the upcoming updates could fundamentally change the use of the Apple Vision Pro. For Apple users and those interested in technology, it will be exciting to see how visionOS develops over the next few years. A look into the future shows that visionOS could become one of the most important building blocks for immersive technology at Apple.
