With iOS 18.1, Apple brings an interesting update for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. One of the most important innovations is the ability to take spatial photos. This feature, originally announced for the iPhone 16 series, is now also available for last year's flagship models.

The iPhone camera has been continuously improving over the last few years, and iOS 18.1 now has an exciting new feature: spatial photo capture. This innovation should make it possible to take photos with more depth, which is particularly interesting for use with the Apple Vision Pro. You can find out exactly what this means and what advantages it offers here.

What are spatial photos?

Spatial photos capture more depth information than regular photos. This makes the images appear more realistic, especially when viewed on devices like the Apple Vision Pro. With the update to iOS 18.1, you can take these photos directly with your iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max. There is a new "Spatial" option in the Camera app that allows you to switch between recording spatial videos and spatial photos.

Technical Details

For best results, Apple recommends holding the iPhone in landscape mode and keeping it as steady as possible when taking spatial photos. Photos are about 5MB in size per image, while one minute of spatial video requires about 130MB of storage space. Videos are recorded in 1080p at 30 fps.

Use with Apple Vision Pro

You can view the spatial photos and videos directly in the Photos app on the Apple Vision Pro. This combination of iPhone and Vision Pro enables an immersive experience that really shows off the depth of the photos. The new visionOS 2 also offers the option of creating spatial photos directly from normal live images in your photo library, which is really fantastic, by the way.

What else does iOS 18.1 bring?

In addition to the introduction of spatial photo capture, iOS 18.1 also includes the first features of Apple Intelligence (not in the EU). These will be officially available from October. Currently, the update is still in beta, which means that developers can already test it.

Spatial Photos: iOS 18.1 Brings Fresh Breath to the iPhone 15 Pro

The update to iOS 18.1 brings exciting new features, especially for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users, especially the ability to take spatial photos. This feature, in combination with Apple Vision Pro, opens up completely new possibilities for photography and video playback. So if you own an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, you can look forward to the update in October and use the full potential of your camera.
