Disney+ password sharing

Over the past few years, Disney+ has seen a steady increase in subscribers as one of the leading streaming services worldwide. But with growth comes challenges, particularly when it comes to password sharing. Starting in September, Disney will seriously crack down on this practice in order to continue making the streaming service a profitable business.

Disney+ has certainly improved the way we consume entertainment since its launch in 2019. With a wide range of films, series and exclusive content, the streaming service has delighted millions of users around the world. But as with many other services, some users have taken advantage of the opportunity to share their passwords to save costs. This practice will now come to an end, as Disney CEO Bob Iger recently announced (via The Verge).

Disney+ and the new password sharing policy

During the earnings announcement, Bob Iger announced that Disney will be taking serious action against password sharing starting in September. This measure is part of a comprehensive strategy to develop Disney+ into an even more profitable business model. Disney has been talking about stopping this practice since last year, but implementation has been delayed several times. In June, Disney began restricting password sharing in some countries, and now this regulation is to be extended worldwide.

comparison with Netflix

Netflix's success in preventing password sharing serves as a model for Disney. Netflix stopped sharing passwords across multiple households in 2023 and subsequently saw strong subscriber growth. Iger admires this approach and sees Netflix as the "gold standard in streaming." The strategy seems to be working, because according to Iger, there has so far been "no backlash at all" from customers who are no longer allowed to share their passwords.

Monetization through additional options

Like Netflix, Disney plans to give subscribers the option to share their plans with people outside their household for an additional fee, although exact pricing for this additional option has not yet been announced. This move could not only increase revenue but also increase customer satisfaction by providing a legal and transparent way to share the services.

Price increases for Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+

In addition to the measures against password sharing, Disney is planning a price increase for its streaming services. From October, Disney+ with advertising will cost $9.99 per month, up from $7.99. The ad-free version will cost $15.99 per month, up from $13.99. Hulu and ESPN+ are also affected by the price increases. These changes reflect the continuous development and increasing value of the content offered.

Tough decisions for long-term stability at Disney+

Disney+'s new measures against password sharing and the planned price increases mark an important step in the evolution of the streaming service. While these changes may seem inconvenient for some users, they aim to ensure the quality and sustainability of the service. With a clear focus on growth and profitability, Disney+ remains committed to continuing to offer its users first-class entertainment. Through these measures, Disney is showing that it is willing to make tough decisions to ensure the long-term stability and growth of Disney+. For users, this means adapting to new rules but also the prospect of continued high-quality content and improved services. (Photo by Mouse family / Bigstockphoto)
