According to well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will not introduce a new iPhone model with Touch ID under the display until 2025 at the earliest.
Kuo had previously predicted that under-display fingerprint recognition technology could appear in an iPhone in 2023 at the earliest. Now he has confirmed this via Twitter updatedAccording to the results of Kuo's recent supply chain intelligence survey, Apple will not launch a new iPhone with Touch ID. Kuo notes that "Face ID with a mask on the iPhone is already a great biometric solution."
Touch ID under the display: Neither in the iPhone 15 nor in the iPhone 16
I had predicted that iPhones will not support under-display fingerprint sensor/Touch ID until 2023 at the earliest. However, the latest survey shows that the new iPhones in 2023 and 2024 may not support under-display Touch ID. Face ID with a mask on the iPhone is already a great biometric solution.
Under-display Touch ID has been a topic of rumors for years. In 2020, leakers claimed that Apple was continuing its work on in-display fingerprint sensors. Rumors that Apple was testing this feature persisted into 2021. Kuo, for his part, predicted in September that the "iPhone 15" could feature in-display Touch ID. At the time, this prediction was pushed back a year, which Kuo explained with "slower-than-expected development progress." In his updated prediction, the analyst didn't give a reason why Touch ID won't appear in an Apple phone in 2023 or 2024. However, based on previous information, it could be due to development or production bottlenecks. (Photo by DenPhoto / Bigstockphoto)
