Apple will host its "California streaming" event on September 14, unveiling the iPhone 13, Apple Watch Series 7, and more. Now, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has spoken out and revealed some details about the Apple Watch Series 7's production issues.
In a new letter to investors, Kuo explains that Apple has resolved production issues with the Apple Watch Series 7 that threatened to hamper the wide availability of the company's new flagship, adding that mass production will now begin shortly. As previously reported, the delay was caused by complications with new designs and technologies, particularly those related to the device's OLED panel. According to Kuo, the G6 is Apple's first use of an OLED production line, which can improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce the cost of the panel. In addition, the panel module features a new contact cable design that uses a LIPO (Low Injection Pressure Overmolding) process that can improve durability.
Apple Watch Series 7: Problems caused a two-week delay
Due to the introduction of many new production processes related to the panel, the Apple Watch 7 panel module encountered reliability issues during the risk ramp-up phase before Jabil began mass production, primarily affecting panel blinking and touch insensitivity. Apple resolved the panel reliability issue by running through various design of experiments (DOE) to find the best production configuration and adjust the qualification standards on the panel and assembly side.
The issues are believed to be with upstream suppliers, not assembly partners like Luxshare. According to Kuo, Luxshare will produce approximately 701,000 of all Apple Watch Series 7 units. The issues caused an estimated two-week delay in Apple's mass production schedule. Kuo also confirmed that the Series 7 will feature a new flat-edged design, with sizes expanded to 41mm and 45mm.
