New subscription level: Spotify tests cheap subscription

Spotify is experimenting with a new ad-supported subscription tier that gives users more freedom over what they listen to than the existing free, ad-supported plan.

The new plan, called Spotify Plus, costs $0.99 per month and allows users to choose the songs they want to stream between ads, with unlimited skipping and on-demand listening. That's in contrast to Spotify's free, ad-based plan, which limits users to skipping no more than six songs per hour and only listening to songs from 15 pre-selected playlists. If users don't want to listen to the playlists, they can only switch between the songs.

Spotify wants to offer “HiFi Premium” level

The streaming service confirmed told The Verge that Spotify Plus is being tested with a limited number of users, stressing that it is only a test and there is no guarantee that this subscription tier will be fully rolled out. Spotify announced plans in February to introduce a new "HiFi Premium" tier later this year. But despite some hints in the code, the new high-definition plan is not yet available. Since then, Apple Music has introduced Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos as well as Apple Music Lossless, two features that have been available to subscribers since June at no additional charge.
