More video content: Instagram attacks TikTok

Instagram is planning a major restructuring to become more relevant in the video sector. The Facebook subsidiary wants to remain competitive with this step and is declaring war on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube.

Instagram will start hosting videos in full-screen mode and wants to catch up with TikTok in particular. explained Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said in a new video that the social platform no longer wants to be seen as the "square photo-sharing app" and will instead focus more on entertainment and videos. Instagram is no stranger to video content, previously offered through features like IGTV, Reels, and Stories. But Mosseri said that Instagram will "use video more broadly" in the future, starting with "full-screen, immersive, entertaining, mobile-first videos," which sounds a lot like TikTok, whose popularity Mosseri admits Instagram wants to emulate.

Instagram wants to become more transparent in the future

Instagram will also begin testing recommendations in the coming months, showing users what they may not yet be following in their feed. As a reminder, the platform just this week began rolling out topics, which users can see more or less of if they wish. Users can expect a lot of experimentation in this area "in the coming months," according to Mosseri. Furthermore, the company intends to become more transparent in the increasingly competitive social media space. This means the Facebook subsidiary plans to communicate more about new features and the "why, how, and wherefore" in the future. (Photo by Unsplash / Solen Feyissa)
