Apple recently released the iOS 12.1 beta for developers and public testers. What's special about it is that it quietly and secretly has the dual SIM function activated.

Apple has published a new support document on this. It explains how the eSim works. It should now be clear that the feature will officially be introduced with iOS 12.1. The supporting devices are the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max and iPhone Xr. Apple gives the user a lot of freedom when using the eSim. The user can save several mobile phone accounts on the built-in SIM at the same time and name them all freely. However, only one account can be actively used. The tariff can be activated at any time via the settings. If a physical SIM card is also inserted, the user can assign a task to the respective tariff.

You can make phone calls and send messages with both tariffs. However, a standard number must be set. This is then used to use iMessage and Facetime. You can also set which contact should be contacted with which phone number. If this is not done, the whole thing will automatically run via the standard phone number - or the device will remember which number a contact was called from once and use this automatically in the future. You can also set up a channel for using mobile data. Apple also gives the user the freedom to store the main contract on the eSIM.

Which providers support the electronic SIM?

In Germany, Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone are listed. The mobile operator Telefonica will follow at a later date. In Austria and the Czech Republic, it will be T-Mobile. Switzerland is not currently listed. In Spain, Vodafone Spain will initially support the service. For Great Britain, it is the provider EE. The service is also already supported in Croatia, Hungary, Canada, the USA and India.
