Patent: Will Apple Watch soon have blood pressure monitoring?

Apple Watch

Alushta, Russia - November 6, 2018: Man hand with Apple Watch Series 4 with app activity on the screen. Apple Watch was created and developed by the Apple inc.

The Apple Watch already has some useful health features. However, monitoring and measuring blood pressure is still missing. However, that could soon change.

As reported by Patently Apple reported, a second important Apple patent was confirmed that enables blood pressure monitoring on the Apple Watch. The company received the first patent related to this feature back in December 2020. According to the patent description, Apple's blood pressure monitoring could be done in a non-invasive way.

Size adjustment is difficult

As a quick review of the base invention, Apple's patent generally relates to measuring and monitoring blood pressure. More specifically, embodiments may determine and apply one or more correction factors to calculate or adjust a measured blood pressure to enable a more accurate blood pressure measurement. This may be particularly beneficial for blood pressure monitors that can be worn by a user and non-invasively measure and monitor a user's blood pressure.

The integration of blood pressure monitoring into the Apple Watch has been expected for years. But how can the component be made smaller to fit inside the Watch? That could be difficult.

Furthermore, Apple's invention provides non-invasive devices and methods for determining blood pressure in a user's cardiovascular system. It may be desirable to reduce the bulkiness of current blood pressure monitors to make blood pressure measurements more convenient. While it may be desirable to reduce the bulkiness of current blood pressure monitors, doing so may present additional challenges.

Blood pressure monitoring in the Apple Watch: The next feature?

Today, it is believed that the new patent could be part of a larger project that either involves blood pressure monitoring built into the Apple Watch or perhaps even a new device.

Apple's second granted patent for blood pressure monitoring is part of a larger project on this topic. On December 10, 2020, Patently Apple published a report on a patent application titled "Apple Reveals an all-new Wearable Blood Pressure Device with an Inflatable Cuff and Controller Interface.

The Apple Watch Series 6 was equipped with blood oxygen monitoring. It also has health functions such as fall detection, heart rate monitoring, ECG and more. There have already been rumors that blood pressure will be the focus this year. It is therefore not impossible that the Apple Watch Series 7 will appear with such a function. But as always with patents - in the end the whole thing could remain just an idea. (Photo by Denys Prykhodov / Bigstockphoto)
