The end of an era: Adobe ends support for Adobe Flash

Adobe Flash Player

Amsterdam, Netherlands - October 13, 2018: Website of Adobe Flash Player.

The end of Adobe Flash has now officially arrived. As previously announced, Adobe has confirmed that support for Flash Player will end after December 31, 2020, and Flash content will no longer run in Flash Player starting January 12, 2021.

The end of Adobe Flash has been looming for years. Back in 2017, Adobe announced that it would stop supporting the Flash plug-in by the end of 2020. Now the company has kept its promise.

“Apple users have been experiencing the web without Flash for some time now”

While Adobe has been working to phase out Flash for the past three years, Apple's message has been consistent. The company stressed on its WebKit blog at the time of Adobe's announcement that the transition from Flash for Apple users would be completed in 2010. began:

Apple users have been experiencing the web without Flash for some time. The iPhone, iPad and iPod touch have never supported Flash. For the Mac, the move away from Flash began in 2010, when Flash was no longer pre-installed. Today, when users install Flash, it remains turned off by default. Safari requires explicit permission on each website before running the Flash plugin.

Of course, the relationship between Apple and Adobe regarding Flash has been strained for years. In fact, ever since Steve Jobs published his famous “Thoughts on Flash” in 2010 to address what was then the biggest criticism of iPhones and iPads as computer replacements.

Apple vs. Adobe: Jobs criticized many weaknesses of Flash

I wanted to write down some of our thoughts on Adobe's Flash products so that customers and critics can better understand why we don't allow Flash on iPhones, iPods, and iPads. Adobe has described our decision as primarily business-driven - they say we want to protect our App Store - but in reality it is based on technology. Adobe claims that we are a closed system and that Flash is open, but in reality the opposite is true.

In the letter, Jobs criticized Flash's many weaknesses, including things like reliability, security, battery life, and performance. Although Adobe disputed Jobs' claims at the time, Apple never included Flash in the iPhone and iPad. Shortly thereafter, Flash began to face its demise.

“Adobe strongly recommends that all users uninstall Flash Player immediately”

Adobe has set up a website detailing its plans to end Flash, stating that users should immediately uninstall Flash from their computers to "protect their systems."

Because Adobe will no longer support Flash Player after December 31, 2020, and will block Flash content from running in Flash Player starting January 12, 2021, Adobe strongly recommends that all users uninstall Flash Player immediately to protect their systems. Some users may continue to see reminders from Adobe to uninstall Flash Player from their system.
