iPhone 12: mmWave 5G reserved for only one model?

5G

5g network and 5G technology with wireless internet wifi connection. 5G global network concept.

In a few weeks, Apple will introduce a new generation of iPhones. Rumor has it that the iPhone 12 series will be the first 5G-capable iPhone fleet. Now a source claims that the fast 5G technology mmWave is only intended for one model.

While the rumors surrounding the display, camera, etc. are clear, previous reports surrounding 5G connectivity have been rather confusing. To be precise, it's about the type of 5G. So the question remains: Will all iPhone 12 models get mmWave 5G or will it be limited to certain versions or certain countries? Some sources believe that only the iPhone 12 Pro series will have the faster mmWave 5G standard worldwide, while others believe that only certain countries will have access to this technology. As a reminder, there are two main 5G standards known as sub-6HGz and mmWave 5G. Sub-6 GHz is slower than mmWave 5G technology, but it has a longer range - suitable for rural areas. Since mmWave is faster but has a shorter range, this technology is more intended for large cities or urban areas.

“Only the iPhone 12 Pro Max is big enough for mmWave”

Now Fast Company wants an anonymous source experience that only the iPhone 12 Pro Max will support mmWave 5G. The reason for this is primarily due to the design. The device should be large enough to accommodate the new antenna design along with a corresponding battery. Since mmWave also requires significantly more battery, only the high-end model is currently an option - according to Fast Company. In addition, however, this model will not be available in every country with mmWave 5G. This means that Fast Company continues to believe that the mmWave version will only be available in the USA, Japan and Korea. The reason for this is network expansion. So-called mmWave networks are not yet established in other countries, which is why these iPhone 12 models will be equipped with sub-6 GHz. It remains to be seen whether the platform will be right in the end. Currently, some assume that Apple will unveil the iPhone 12 series in October and introduce it in stages. So we will certainly read one or two rumors by then. AirPods Pro on special offer at Amazon – now available for 199 euros. (Photo by listock / Bigstockphoto)
