Apple has designed a series of awards to recognize the exceptional craftsmanship of music production. Each award consists of an Apple-designed silicon wafer suspended between a polished pane of glass and a machined and anodized aluminum casing. The award is based on a perfect 12-inch wafer of silicon with nanometer-scale imperfections. Copper layers are deposited and arranged using ultraviolet lithography to create connections between billions of transistors. The result of this process, which takes several months before the wafer is cut into hundreds of individual chips, is stunning and distinctive.
