Apple reached a market capitalization of five trillion dollars for the first time on Tuesday during regular trading. Only one other company has ever touched this milestone. And no other company has ever moved from one trillion-dollar mark to the next as quickly as this one.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple's share price surpassed $340 during trading on July 28, pushing its market capitalization over five trillion dollars. The value continued to fluctuate, meaning the mark was only briefly touched. Nevertheless, Apple has reclaimed its position as the most valuable publicly traded company, after having repeatedly swapped places with Nvidia. The four trillion dollar mark was only nine months ago: at the end of October 2025, a strong iPhone sales cycle had driven the market value to four trillion dollars<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fastest trillion-dollar move since 2018<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The intervals between the milestones present an uneven picture. The first three milestones were reached in quick succession, followed by an almost four-year pause \u2013 and then the fastest jump ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between the third and fourth trillion dollars, 1,394 days passed, and between the fourth and fifth, only 273. From surpassing the first trillion-dollar mark in August 2018<\/a> to the present day, the market capitalization has increased fivefold in just under eight years. Back then, a share price of $207.05 was sufficient for this \u2013 before the subsequent stock split.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the number five is not yet determined<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A price touched during trading is not the same as a closing price. The previous milestone illustrates how far apart the two can be: the three trillion mark initially fell only briefly on January 3, 2022<\/a>, and the first closing price above this threshold didn't occur until June 2023 \u2013 roughly seventeen months later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There's another effect that's easily overlooked: Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying the share price by the number of outstanding shares. Because Apple continuously buys back its own shares, the number of outstanding shares decreases \u2013 and the share price needed for five trillion dollars shifts upwards with each buyback program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From pioneer to follower<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Apple was the first company in the world to reach the first three trillion-dollar milestones. This streak ended with the fourth: Nvidia led the way in July 2025, followed by Microsoft later that same month, with Apple arriving in third place. The fifth trillion-dollar milestone had also already been claimed, as Nvidia was the first company ever to reach it on October 29, 2025<\/a>, driven by the demand for GPUs for generative AI systems. The club of five-trillion-dollar companies thus has exactly two members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The record coincides with two dates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For the company's core operations, a valuation mark changes nothing; it merely reflects market expectations. The coming weeks will be more telling: On July 30, Apple will release its third-quarter results, for which analysts expect, among other things, strong performance in its services business<\/a>. Five weeks later, the leadership change will take place: Tim Cook will assume the role of Executive Chairman on September 1, and John Ternus will take over as CEO<\/a>.
