Barely four months after the launch of the most affordable MacBook ever, its successor is already waiting in the wings. A faster chip, more RAM, and fresh colors are considered a given \u2013 but the biggest wish of many buyers remains unfulfilled. Here's what we know so far about the MacBook Neo 2.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MacBook Neo filled a gap in the Mac lineup in March 2026 that had existed since the end of the 12-inch MacBook: an Apple notebook priced below \u20ac700. Its success was more significant than Apple had anticipated \u2013 and it is precisely this success that is now driving the second generation. This is part of a wave of renewal that is expected to include eleven new Mac models by 2028<\/a> and will affect virtually every product line. With the Neo, it's less about a completely new device and more about refining the two areas where the first generation was most audibly criticized: the chip and the RAM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A19 Pro: The chip comes with 12 GB of RAM<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The switch to the A19 Pro is the only point that several independent sources have consistently mentioned over several months. Taiwanese columnist and former Bloomberg reporter Tim Culpan reported on such plans as early as April 2026, after he had previously exposed Apple's chip shortage for the Neo<\/a>. In July, Bloomberg followed up: Apple was reportedly already using internal test devices with the A19 Pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What's interesting here isn't so much the chip itself, but what's connected to it. The A19 Pro from the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone Air is inextricably linked to 12 GB of RAM \u2013 both iPhone models feature this configuration. The much-discussed doubling to 12 GB is therefore not an independent design decision, but a consequence of the chip choice. Anyone using the A19 Pro in the Neo essentially gets the 12 GB included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The performance leap is still noticeable, at least mathematically. The A19 Pro uses six CPU cores, with two performance cores and four efficiency cores. TSMC manufactures it using a refined N3P process, and each GPU core is equipped with its own Neural Accelerator \u2013 an architecture tailored for locally running AI models. This is precisely where the first Neo generation, with its 8 GB of RAM, reaches its limits as soon as multiple applications and Apple Intelligence demand memory simultaneously. An earlier report already indicated that the successor would be a refresh of the model with a clear focus on performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It remains to be seen which GPU configuration the Neo 2 will receive. The A19 Pro is available with five and six graphics cores; the iPhone Air uses the smaller variant. Since the current MacBook Neo uses an A18 Pro with the sixth graphics core disabled, the five-core version would be the logical successor \u2013 though it hasn't been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why success became a problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The chip change has a business rationale that is difficult to understand without the history of the first generation. Apple equipped the MacBook Neo with A18 Pro chips, one of which had a defective graphics core during manufacturing. Instead of scrapping them, Apple deactivated the affected core and used the chips in the cheapest Mac \u2013 a practice known in the semiconductor industry as binning, which made the entry-level price possible in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This supply was depleted faster than planned. After Apple increased its production capacity from the original five to six million units to ten million, new A18 Pro chips had to be ordered \u2013 and these come as flawless, fully enabled samples, resulting in correspondingly higher unit costs. Furthermore, TSMC has limited available three-nanometer capacity because AI customers are tying up the majority of the yield. Culpan subsequently described a doubling of production while the price remained an open question<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, memory prices skyrocketed, driven by the expansion of AI data centers \u2013 an effect that is widening the entire market along price lines<\/a>. For the second generation, this means: The A19 Pro is not only faster, it's also the chip whose production is already underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The touchscreen is off the table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Few details in the Neo rumor mill have taken as many turns as the question of a touchscreen. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo floated the idea of a second-generation touchscreen variant in September 2025, later specifying on-cell technology. In March 2026, he revised his own prediction, citing industry reviews \u2013 and just a few days later, Mark Gurman declared the matter closed: He would be surprised if the Neo received a touchscreen within the next three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reasoning is economically sound. A touch panel requires a different display assembly, thus driving up precisely the costs whose control defines the Neo. Furthermore, there's the product line logic: touch functionality is intended for the high end of the range, specifically the expected MacBook Ultra with an OLED touchscreen<\/a>. Equipping an entry-level device with a feature missing from the more expensive models would be uncharacteristic for Apple. The original report regarding the touch-enabled version<\/a> is therefore considered obsolete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overall situation is similar with the display: No source mentions OLED, ProMotion, or P3 color gamut in connection with the Neo 2. The 13-inch panel with 2408 \u00d7 1506 pixels, 500 nits, and sRGB color space is likely to remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New colors \u2013 without specific shades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Additional color options appeared in reports from Culpan in May and Bloomberg in July. Currently, the MacBook Neo is available in silver, pink, citrus, and indigo, each with a color-coordinated keyboard. No source has yet revealed which colors will be added. Bloomberg also suggests that Apple plans to regularly rotate the color palette \u2013 meaning the four current colors may not necessarily remain available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The context in which the color issue arose is noteworthy: Culpan explicitly described new paint finishes as a tool to maintain customer satisfaction during a price increase. A marketing instrument, therefore, not a technical upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Price: The starting position has already shifted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is where the biggest changes have occurred for buyers in German-speaking countries. At its market launch in March 2026, the MacBook Neo cost \u20ac699 in Germany and Austria with 256 GB, \u20ac799 with 512 GB and Touch ID, and \u20ac599 for educational use. In Switzerland, it started at CHF 579, with the version with Touch ID costing CHF 679.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 25, 2026, Apple discontinued this pricing structure. Since then, German prices have been \u20ac799 and \u20ac899<\/a> \u2013 an increase of \u20ac100 per configuration. A successor, therefore, won't start at \u20ac699, but rather at an already higher price point. Whether Apple will maintain this pricing, justify the increase with improved features, or take countermeasures is completely unclear; no source has provided a price for the second generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A second point, often overlooked, concerns the included accessories: In Europe, the MacBook Neo doesn't come with a power adapter, neither in Switzerland nor in the EU. Only a USB-C cable is included. In the US, a 20-watt power adapter is included. Anyone in these regions who doesn't already have a suitable charger at home will therefore need to factor in an additional expense \u2013 and this is unlikely to change with the Neo 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will happen to the 256GB model?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In May 2026, there was talk that Apple might completely discontinue the base model with 256 GB of storage and no Touch ID. This would have effectively increased the entry-level price without any individual configuration becoming more expensive \u2013 a pattern Apple had already used with the Mac mini and Mac Studio. However, things turned out differently: Apple instead raised the prices of both models and retained both variants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question remains open for the second generation. Should Apple continue with the two-tiered approach, Touch ID will likely remain tied to the larger SSD. Reliable information regarding the future model structure is currently unavailable. The notoriously slow flash storage of the first generation<\/a> also hasn't been mentioned as a problem in any report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the MacBook Neo 2 might be released<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is no official release date. Bloomberg's Mac roadmap explicitly omits any mention of a date for the Neo 2. The widely cited figure of "first half of 2027" is an inference: The first generation was released in March 2026, and Apple is expected to update the Neo annually going forward. Even this inference has recently weakened: During July, several product overviews within a few days replaced the spring 2027 release date with a deliberately open-ended timeframe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One factor cautions against excessive optimism regarding the release date: Apple has explicitly tied the release schedules of several Mac models to the availability of RAM. For precisely this reason, the launch date for the Mac mini and Mac Studio remains unclear. A device whose key innovation is a doubling of memory is not immune to this shortage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is the MacBook Neo 2 intended for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The target audience remains unchanged compared to the first generation: school, university, everyday office work, streaming, word processing, occasional image editing. The Neo remains the most affordable way to use macOS \u2013 without fan noise, with an aluminum casing and a display that is unusually good for this price range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you already own a MacBook Neo, the answer is clear: upgrading after just over a year isn't worthwhile for most people. The jump from 8 to 12 GB is real, but it solves a problem that rarely occurs in everyday use with a browser, email, and Office applications \u2013 it's mainly noticeable when running many applications simultaneously and with locally running AI functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation is different when buying new. If you don't urgently need a device, waiting will give you the advantage of a longer lifespan: A notebook with 12 GB of RAM will simply last longer than one with 8 GB, especially since Apple is increasingly running AI functions directly on the device. However, if you need to buy now, retailers regularly offer significantly lower prices than Apple's list price: The 512 GB version with Touch ID<\/a> currently costs \u20ac749 instead of \u20ac899 on Amazon. The advantage of this generation is that its limitations are well-known and well-documented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And anyone who seriously needs more performance should re-evaluate the price difference. The price increase in June has brought the Neo closer to the MacBook Air, which answers the question of whether the price premium is justified<\/a> differently than it did in the spring.
