The long-awaited iPad mini with an OLED display is getting noticeably closer: According to a report from South Korea, mass production of the panels has already begun. This suggests a market launch later this year \u2013 and the smallest iPad screen will finally get the technology that was previously reserved for more expensive models.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple has been gradually expanding OLED technology across its product range for years. Following the iPhone and Apple Watch, the iPad Pro was released in 2024, and the iPad mini has long been considered the next candidate. An A19 Pro chip and a market launch in the second half of the year are considered likely<\/a> for the upcoming model. A new supply chain report now provides a concrete indication that this timeline will hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mass production for the first OLED iPad mini<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to a report by the Korean industry publication ETNews<\/a>, Samsung Display began mass production of OLED panels for Apple's first OLED iPad mini this month. While an official release date for the device itself is still pending, the start of panel production is considered a reliable indicator of the further roadmap. A launch in the second half of 2026 is widely expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OLED replaces LCD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The current iPad mini 7 still uses an LCD. Switching to OLED will bring higher contrast, deeper blacks, and improved energy efficiency \u2013 advantages that will be particularly noticeable with videos, photos, and outdoor use. For the compact tablet, it would be the biggest display upgrade in years and bring it closer to the image quality already offered by the iPad Pro. Industry analysts expect the iPad mini to make the switch even before the iPad Air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next step for the MacBook will follow in July<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The report isn't limited to the iPad mini. Production of the OLED panels for the upcoming MacBook Pro is slated to begin in July \u2013 coinciding with the launch of Samsung's new 8.6-generation OLED production line, considered key to Apple's Mac transition. The redesigned MacBook Pro, potentially to be called the \"MacBook Ultra,\" would be the next Apple computer to feature OLED, replacing the current Mini-LED technology. According to reports from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this model will also be the first Mac with a touchscreen. It's expected to launch toward the end of this year or early 2027, depending on how well Apple manages the industry-wide memory chip shortage. The arguments in favor of the name \"MacBook Ultra\" are closely tied to OLED, touch functionality, and a new enclosure<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who supplies which panels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The distribution of suppliers is also revealing. According to the report, all OLED panels for Apple's products in the second half of the year come from Samsung Display and LG Display. For the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, both manufacturers are said to share production, while LG Display is the sole supplier for the Apple Watch Series 12. Samsung, in turn, is reportedly the exclusive supplier of panels for the foldable iPhone, the OLED iPad mini, and the OLED MacBook Pro. The fact that Samsung alone supplies the display for Apple's first foldable iPhone<\/a> underscores the close collaboration between the two companies when it comes to particularly demanding panels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinese manufacturer BOE is not involved: According to the report, the company is being excluded from iPhone 18 production after quality problems previously delayed the delivery of displays for the iPhone 17 Pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple's OLED offensive is gaining momentum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With the iPad mini and the MacBook Pro, two device categories that currently use older display technology are moving closer to the OLED transition. If the roadmap holds true, Apple will have switched large parts of its product range to OLED by early 2027 \u2013 from the iPhone and Apple Watch to the first Macs.
