Anyone hoping for a noticeably redesigned Apple Watch in fall 2026 should lower their expectations. According to a recent report from Mark Gurman's Power-On newsletter, the Apple Watch Series 12 will be largely identical to the Series 11 \u2013 with a new watch face, performance improvements, and little else. Apple Intelligence is also unlikely to play a direct role on the wrist for the time being.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For three generations, the Apple Watch has been undergoing a period of cautious refinement. Even the Series 11 offered only modest hardware improvements over the Series 10, but introduced a high blood pressure warning feature for the first time. The Series 12, now expected in 2026, appears to be continuing this trend. The fact that major design changes aren't expected until 2028 at the earliest was already hinted at in November 2025, when a leaker pushed the redesign date further into the future<\/a>. Gurman's latest report<\/a> confirms this trend and also suggests that watchOS 27 won't bring any significant AI advancements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the Series 12 is supposed to bring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gurman specifically mentions three points. First: at least one new watch face. Second: performance improvements, presumably via a new chip in the S series. Third: minor bug fixes and security updates via watchOS 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the report only hints at the possibility of minor hardware changes, without specifying them in detail. This aligns with previous predictions: major sensor enhancements or a new case design are not expected. The much-discussed fingerprint sensor was also reported as canceled for 2026 by a Chinese leaker in early May 2026<\/a>. This eliminates one of the most exciting hardware features for this generational shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Apple Intelligence is currently missing from the wrist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One aspect that explains the sober outlook is the Apple Watch's hardware capacity. Reports indicate that the watch currently has between one and 1.5 gigabytes of RAM. For models that run Apple Intelligence directly, Apple has previously required at least eight gigabytes. The gap is enormous \u2013 and it can't be closed quickly in such a small form factor with such a tight power budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple has therefore omitted the Apple Intelligence step in previous generations. What remains technically conceivable is mirroring: The Watch could display results generated by the paired iPhone via Apple Intelligence. Specifically, this would mean, for example, that notification summaries or responses from the new Gemini-powered Siri could be passed on to the wrist without the models actually running on the watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the current report provides no indication that watchOS 27 will actually deliver this bridge. Should Apple postpone the Apple Intelligence display on the wrist, the watch would remain largely without any visible AI benefits for another year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Apple Intelligence Hurdle in Detail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The technical situation explains why Apple is proceeding so cautiously with the Apple Watch. A voice assistant of the caliber of the upcoming Siri chatbot requires not only processing power but also storage for the devices themselves. The watch is designed for a battery life of well over a day \u2013 any additional processing power would noticeably reduce this. Apple has therefore long pursued the approach of offloading AI tasks to the iPhone, iPad, or Mac and treating the Watch as a display device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only a significantly larger battery or a much more efficient chip could break this logic. Neither seems likely for 2026. Therefore, what Gurman identifies as visibly new in the Series 12 remains primarily a software detail: the new watch face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead to 2028<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The bigger question behind the current report is when Apple will introduce a true generational upgrade to the Apple Watch line. Several reports suggest that a redesign with a glass case isn't expected until 2028. Until then, two more generations with manageable updates could be released \u2013 Series 12 this fall and Series 13 a year later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For buyers, this means in practice: those who already own an Apple Watch Series 11 will likely find little reason to upgrade when the next generation arrives. Those still wearing a Series 8 or older, however, and waiting for a major upgrade, could hold off on buying until the glass redesign \u2013 assuming that release date holds. The equation shifts, though, as soon as watchOS 27 finally brings Apple Intelligence displays to the wrist. By WWDC 2026 on June 8th, it should become clear how far Apple actually plans to go with this transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A deliberately reserved generation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From a strategic perspective, this cautious approach isn't necessarily a weakness. Apple has steadily expanded the Apple Watch's health features in recent years \u2013 high blood pressure alerts, sleep apnea detection, atrial fibrillation. A year without a major hardware leap doesn't have to mean stagnation; it can also serve as preparation before the first completely redesigned case appears in 2028.
