OpenAI has released a separate ChatGPT app for iPhone and iPad, specifically designed for school and work environments using Microsoft Intune. The app is free and aimed at organizations that need to centrally manage their apps.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the regular ChatGPT apps continue to target end users, OpenAI is taking a different approach with this new release. The application, simply named "ChatGPT for Intune," fills a specific gap in the enterprise sector. With this, OpenAI is responding to a request that, according to employees, was described internally as a "major demand" from ChatGPT enterprise customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microsoft Intune is one of the most widely used solutions for businesses and educational institutions to manage apps on their employees' or students' devices. Users of this management system can only access applications explicitly approved for Intune. Regular apps like the standard ChatGPT are not compatible in such environments. This new app fills this gap, making the OpenAI assistant officially available for the first time on tightly managed Apple devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Functionally, ChatGPT for Intune is in no way inferior to the regular version. Images can be generated from descriptions, or existing images can be modified via prompts. Photos and documents can be uploaded, for example, to summarize content, extract key information, or ask questions about specific files. The new app isn't OpenAI's only move within the Apple ecosystem. Earlier this year, the company released Codex as a dedicated Mac app for developers<\/a> \u2013 an agent-based coding tool that has grown to over three million weekly users in recent weeks. Simultaneously, a more affordable ChatGPT Pro tier was introduced specifically for Codex users<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are increasing indications that OpenAI might also release a Codex-related iPhone app in the coming days. This makes it clear: the days when ChatGPT was just a single iOS app for OpenAI are over. Instead, a portfolio is emerging, specialized according to target group \u2013 from end users and developers to tightly managed enterprise customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why timing is important<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Apple and OpenAI operate within a complex web, which in recent months has been characterized by increasing competition from Google and Anthropic<\/a>, as well as legal disputes. xAI has sued Apple and OpenAI over Siri integration<\/a>, and Apple itself is working to expand its AI offerings system-wide with iOS 26.5 and iOS 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this complex situation, an Intune-enabled app is a rather quiet, but strategically important step. Until now, ChatGPT simply wasn't officially usable in many companies and schools. With the new app, the assistant becomes available for the first time in areas that were previously closed to OpenAI \u2013 and precisely where paid enterprise subscriptions have the greatest impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Availability and classification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ChatGPT for Intune is available<\/a> worldwide in the App Store \u2013 including the German store. Installation must be done via the organization's Intune management system; direct download by private individuals is not the intended use case, even though the app is technically freely available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For businesses and educational institutions that have been waiting for an Intune-compatible AI solution, this release is a long overdue step. For Apple users in a private setting, nothing changes: the regular ChatGPT app and the system-level integration with Apple Intelligence remain the best options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With ChatGPT for Intune, OpenAI is demonstrating more clearly than ever before that a single universal app is no longer sufficient.
