According to reports, Apple is planning a significant AI upgrade for the Photos app \u2013 with tools to expand, enhance, and realign images.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Photos app is one of the most frequently used apps on the iPhone \u2013 and yet it's also one of the areas where Apple has shown less innovation than its competitors in recent years. Google Photos and Samsung's gallery apps have already introduced AI-powered editing tools. With iOS 27, Apple apparently intends to catch up. A new report describes three specific new features that are slated to become part of an "Apple Intelligence Tools" section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three new AI tools in the Photos app<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to Bloomberg<\/a>, Apple is working on a redesign of the Photos app's editing interface. At its core is a new section called \"Apple Intelligence Tools,\" which will bring together three key AI features. Each of these features promises to transform images within seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extend:<\/strong> This function allows images to be extended beyond their original frame. The example from the report: A close-up photo of a landmark can be automatically augmented with a suitably generated surrounding area. Users can determine the size of the extension themselves by dragging the edges of the image with their finger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enhance:<\/strong> This option is designed to automatically optimize image quality. It focuses on key aspects such as exposure, color, and sharpness. Apple is implementing a tool similar to Google Photos' "Magic Editor" feature, but it should run entirely on the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reframe:<\/strong> The third function is aimed at spatial photos. Reframe allows you to shift perspectives after the fact. Spatial photos \u2013 that is, images with depth information, which can be displayed spatially on the Vision Pro, for example \u2013 thus gain an important editing tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Development is not proceeding smoothly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The report also makes it clear that development has not been without its challenges. Extend and Reframe, in particular, are reportedly not yet functioning reliably in internal tests. This could lead Apple to initially hold back certain tools or introduce them in a scaled-down version \u2013 depending on how quickly the underlying AI models can be further optimized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This caution aligns with Apple's previous strategy. Unlike some competitors, Apple only releases public AI features when they work reliably \u2013 even at the risk of delayed delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

iOS 27 aims to improve upon iOS 26<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond its photo features, iOS 27 appears to offer broader improvements in several areas. As previously reported, Apple plans, among other things, a significant enhancement to the Siri experience<\/a> and a clear focus on bug fixes and overall stability. This is Apple's response to criticism from recent months that iOS updates have been plagued by minor technical issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 27 at WWDC 2026 on June 8th. The first beta versions should be available starting in June \u2013 developers typically receive access immediately after the keynote. The final release is expected in the fall of 2026, as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The planned features are part of a whole series of Apple Intelligence enhancements. Apple has been working steadily over the past few months to broaden the scope of its AI platform. It was recently revealed that Apple is planning a comprehensive<\/a> AI offensive with iOS 27, centered around its own Siri app. The new generation of Apple Intelligence models is expected to run significantly more efficiently \u2013 a crucial factor if AI image processing is to function directly on the iPhone and Mac in the future, without being processed in the cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will also be interesting to see what hardware requirements the new features will have. Previous Apple intelligence tools required an iPhone 15 Pro or newer \u2013 this will likely also apply to the new photo tools. Those using older devices will probably be out of luck initially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many iPhone users, iOS 27 could bring a noticeable improvement to the Photos app. So far, Apple lags behind Google in generative image editing, which has set the standard with its Pixel Magic Editor. If Extend, Enhance, and Reframe work as promised, it would be a significant step forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From our perspective, this development is a logical step \u2013 but also one that Apple must proceed with very cautiously. The Reframe feature for Spatial Photos demonstrates that Apple is consistently developing its own hardware strategy: Vision Pro content will become editable on the iPhone, further normalizing the concept of spatial computing. Whether all three features will be released in time for fall 2026 remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the Photos app is about to receive one of its biggest updates in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

iOS 27: Who should wait?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Anyone already considering buying a new iPhone in the coming months should opt for a current Pro model \u2013 only these devices are expected to support all AI features. Existing iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro users should pay particular attention to the WWDC keynote on June 8th, where Apple is expected to officially unveil the new tools. Amateur photographers and users with many photos will benefit most from the update \u2013 provided Apple manages to resolve the still-unstable features before the fall release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
