However, the situation regarding the release date has recently become less clear: of Apple's upcoming smart home devices, the camera is the last in line. Nevertheless, there are strong indications that this will be Apple's first direct competitor to Ring, Nest, and Arlo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the Security Camera, Apple is entering a completely new product category. The camera is designed to integrate seamlessly into the Home app, distinguish between multiple people using facial recognition, and boast a battery life of several months. It's part of a larger strategy with a roadmap extending to 2028, which, in addition to the camera, includes a new Apple TV, updated HomePods, and the HomePad. Apple's first HomeKit camera<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a ring-like indoor security camera that integrates directly into the Home app. It's designed not only for surveillance but also for person recognition and motion detection for home automation. Possible scenarios include lights turning off when a room is empty or a family member's music starting as soon as they enter. Apple anticipates that many users will distribute multiple cameras throughout their homes to implement such automations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key feature, according to reports, is Face ID and infrared sensors, which the camera will use to recognize who is in a room. This technology would seamlessly complement the HomePad<\/a>, which is also expected to have a TrueDepth camera with multi-user recognition. This would clearly differentiate Apple from the competition: While Ring and Nest also offer facial recognition, their local, end-to-end encrypted approach promises significantly greater data privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audio monitoring and HomeKit Secure Video<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Similar to the HomePods, the camera is designed to monitor ambient sounds and detect alarms such as smoke detectors or sirens; the user would be notified immediately if an alarm is detected. Integration with HomeKit Secure Video is a given. This feature encrypts video recordings end-to-end in iCloud and requires an iCloud+ subscription: 50 GB allows one camera, 200 GB up to five, and the 2 TB plan and above allow unlimited cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Bloomberg, one of the most exciting technical details concerns the battery: it is said to last for several months up to a year. This would allow Apple's camera to be used without a fixed power connection \u2013 a clear advantage over many competing products that require regular charging or a cable connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The software foundation is already being created<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the hardware is still just a rumor, Apple is already developing the software for it. At WWDC, the company expanded the Home app as part of the next generation of Apple Intelligence, adding features such as smarter notifications for security camera alerts. This perfectly aligns with the concept of a camera that not only records but also evaluates events and only sends notifications when they are relevant \u2013 another building block that Apple is gradually preparing for its connected home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the date can no longer be narrowed down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since the first Bloomberg reports in 2024, the Apple Security Camera was expected for late 2026 or later, usually alongside the HomePod. This pairing is no longer valid. The latest report on the smart home roadmap lists Apple TV, HomePod mini, and the smart home hub as ready for launch - the first two for the fall, the hub from October to early next year. The camera is explicitly listed behind them, along with a robotic nine-inch version of the hub, and no timeframe is given for either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The connection to the HomePad<\/a> remains in terms of functionality: The display shows the camera feeds and controls the automations, and facial recognition works on the same principle on both devices. However, in terms of timing, the camera is relegated to a secondary role compared to the device it is actually intended to complement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is the Apple Security Camera intended for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The camera is aimed at anyone who wants to keep their smart home entirely within the Apple ecosystem. Those already using HomeKit, planning a HomePad, and prioritizing data privacy will likely find Apple's own camera offers the most seamless integration. If you're currently using a third-party HomeKit camera from Logitech or Eve, it's worth waiting patiently \u2013 existing models will continue to work, and there's no set release date to wait for anyway.
