Apple is apparently working on a new smart home product that will combine security and automation. The focus is on a small home security sensor that offers more capabilities than a traditional camera and is likely to be deeply integrated into the Apple ecosystem.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information comes<\/a> from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. A profile of Apple executive John Ternus mentions that several new home products are currently in development. These include a tabletop robot with a movable display, a smart home hub with Apple Intelligence and facial recognition, and a small security sensor codenamed J450.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previous reports referred to this product as a security camera. However, the new description as a sensor suggests a more versatile device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combination of camera and sensor<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Apple J450 sensor aims to combine security and intelligent recognition. It will feature facial recognition and infrared sensors that can identify who is in a room, taking the device beyond simple motion detection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the sensor is designed to be battery-operated and therefore wireless, allowing for flexible placement throughout the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automation at the heart of it all<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Besides security, automation plays a key role. The sensor is designed to detect when people enter or leave rooms and react accordingly. Examples include automatically switching off lights or playing personalized music depending on the person detected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple assumes that several of these sensors will be distributed throughout the household in order to reliably implement such functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of a larger smart home system<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The sensor is likely part of a larger Apple ecosystem. Third-party HomeKit devices already offer similar functionality, such as motion and person detection, or temperature and brightness measurements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple is also planning further products, including a smart home hub and possibly a video doorbell with Face ID. These devices are intended to work together and serve as an extension of the hub, which is currently expected to launch in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the J450 sensor, Apple is pursuing a clear strategy: security and automation are to become more closely integrated. The device could not only monitor, but also actively react to people in the household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
