Apple has introduced two new chips, the M5 Pro and the M5 Max, which power the new MacBook Pro. Both models are aimed at professional users in fields such as AI, 3D rendering, software development, data analysis, and post-production. The goal is a significant performance increase while maintaining high energy efficiency. This is based on a new Fusion architecture developed by Apple, which further scales computing power, graphics performance, and memory bandwidth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developing its own chips is a central component of Apple's product strategy. The M5 Pro and M5 Max continue this approach. According to Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technologies, the new chips represent a significant advancement. They combine the world's fastest CPU cores with a next-generation GPU, integrated Neural Accelerators, and a faster Neural Engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Fusion Architecture<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The M5 Pro and M5 Max are based on a new Fusion architecture. This architecture combines two third-generation 3-nanometer dies into a single system-on-a-chip. The coupling is achieved with high bandwidth and low latency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SoC integrates a powerful CPU, a scalable GPU, a media engine, a shared memory controller, a neural engine, and support for Thunderbolt 5. This tight integration ensures short distances between components and high overall efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18-core CPU with super cores<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Both chips feature a new 18-core CPU with six super cores and twelve new performance cores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Apple, the super cores offer the world's fastest single-threaded performance. This is made possible by increased front-end bandwidth, a new cache hierarchy, and improved branch prediction. The additional performance cores are designed for energy-efficient multithreaded workloads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, the M5 Pro and M5 Max achieve up to 30 percent more performance in professional workloads and up to 2.5 times higher multithreaded performance compared to the M1 Pro and M1 Max.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next-generation GPU with AI acceleration<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the model, the GPU scales to up to 40 cores. Each core contains its own neural accelerator. Combined with the higher bandwidth of the shared memory, this results in more than four times the peak GPU computing power for AI compared to the previous generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In applications using ray tracing, graphics performance increases by up to 35 percent compared to the M4 Pro and M4 Max. This significantly accelerates complex visual effects and 3D rendering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M5 Pro: For demanding applications<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The M5 Pro combines a CPU with up to 18 cores with a GPU with up to 20 cores. Compared to the M4 Pro, it offers four additional CPU cores, resulting in up to 30 percent higher multithreaded performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It supports up to 64 GB of shared memory with a bandwidth of up to 307 GB\/s. The GPU's peak AI performance is more than four times that of the M4 Pro and more than six times that of the M1 Pro. Graphics performance is up to 20 percent higher than the M4 Pro and 2.2 times higher than the M1 Pro. In ray tracing applications, performance increases by up to 35 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M5 Max: Maximum performance and bandwidth<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The M5 Max is aimed at particularly computationally intensive workflows such as 3D animation or AI research. It combines an 18-core CPU with a GPU with up to 40 cores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multithreaded performance is 15 percent higher than that of the M4 Max. It supports up to 128 GB of shared memory with a bandwidth of up to 614 GB\/s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the area of AI, the M5 Max achieves more than four times the peak GPU computing power of the previous generation and more than six times that of the M1 Max. Graphics performance increases by up to 20 percent compared to the M4 Max and by 2.2 times compared to the M1 Max. In ray tracing applications, the increase is up to 30 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other technologies<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Both chips feature a faster 16-core Neural Engine with higher memory bandwidth to accelerate on-device AI and Apple Intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The media engine supports hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC, AV1 decoding, and ProRes encoding and decoding. Memory Integrity Enforcement provides permanently active memory protection without any performance degradation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thunderbolt 5 is supported directly on the chip via specially developed controllers and is intended to offer the most powerful implementation of this interface in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max is available for pre-order. Shipping begins on Wednesday, March 11th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
